Hello everyone,

I have little to no understanding of networking but can follow instruction fairly well.

I have a PLC with an Ethernet port and is capable of sending email by connecting to smpt server.

So I bout a cisco Linksys E1200 and followed these instructions to convert the router to a wireless bridge. That worked well and I can access the internet from my PC.

I setup my PLC as per application instruction and connected it to the router but the connection fails.
PLC set up is
1- assign an IP address to the PLC port on the same subnet as the router
2- specify the router IP address (i believe is used as gateway whatever that means)
3- specify router IP address as in the DNS server settings.

I have no idea what to look for to troubleshoot and anything that can get me started is greatly appreciated.

What kind of network is this? Those IP are Public Addresses. You should probably contact the administrator of the network.

This setup is in my office so I guess that makes me the network administrator.

Ok how about his.

Let's say I want to connect my computer to the converted router via a static IP how do I do that?

Here's what I did so far and have not worked:

Setup>basic setup>

Connection type= Static IP
WAN IP Address= Network Setup>Router IP (same ip in both)
Subnet mask: the subnet mask for the ip
Gateway= same as WAN IP Address
DNS1, DNS2 and DNS3 = same ip address I set up under services

Services>Static Leases
I added three mac addresses and assigned three IPs

Ok that was just dumb Very Happy

I didn't know what the wan port was for.

SO back to square one. I think the PLC requires a static IP. Does setting up static IP by assigning them to MAC addresses work? I mean is the same as the ISP's provided static IP?

Thanks

A static IP is set directly at the device. What you set up on the dhcp server is static leases.

Did you use the same IP when you tested with a PC?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I did just that. I set up the at the device and when I look in router's "control panel> Status" (you know by browsing to my router's IP address) the PLC appears listed under Active Clients. Does that mean it is connected?

Then scanned the network with wireshark and when I activate a request (to connect to email server) from the PLC I see only one entry: Who has xxx.xxx.xx.x? Tell xxx.xxx.x.xx. (but actual ip addresses) and that't it no replies or anything under that. What does that mean.

Thanks a lot

Is 96.49.234.171 the address of your main router and not the E1200?

No that is the address of the E1200. I should also mention that I now can setup my PC's network adapter with static IP to connect to the E1200 and to the internet.

For some reason the same method is not working with the PLC as I'm sure it is using different protocol or something that the router is blocking access to but I can't figure out what.
I just enabled UPnp and that didn't help.

Gateway must be the address of the router. The E1200 is only a bridge.

The E1200 is setup as Client and as I mentioned I have my PC connected to the E1200 with static IP and connected to the internet.

I am tracing the no reply to ARP request as it seems the PLC is sending ARP request to the router but the router is not replying. Am I on the right track or going astray again?

I hope you meant Client Bridge.

With Client, there have to be a separate sub-net behind the router.

Client / Client Bridge
Connect two wired networks using a WiFi link (WIRELESS connection between two routers). The secondary router must have dd-wrt installed; the primary router does not need to have dd-wrt.

Client Bridged - Join two wired networks by two Wireless routers building a bridge. All computers can see one another in Windows Network.
Client Mode - Join two wired networks by two Wireless routers (unbridged). Computers on one wired network can not see computers on other wired network in Windows Network.

Why the hell are you linking a post to an Atheros device when your router is a Broadcom?

Well, obviously because I don't know what I'm doing.
I initially had it in Bridge mode and had problems so I read some more and changed it to Client mode and that didn't help but since then I learned a bit more and fixed a few mistakes so I will set it back to Bridge and see what happens.

Thanks a lot.

That didn't work at all and not I can't even access internet from my PC.

So, there's so much contradictory information out there that this has been a total waste of time and effort.

How about we start from scratch:

Connecting "one" PLC Ethernet port to acccess the internet for the purpose of sending email. I want to use a wireless router so that I can connect the PLC to it with a cable. Is that Client? Client Bridge? Router? Gateway?

Thanks
