Tend to agree Per Yngve Berg, but extender models mentioned are not typical or what usually comes to mind.

Edit: Zero issues QCA EX7500. Also, see EX7700 and EX8000 these are not regular extender hardware specs.

Per Yngve Berg wrote:
Extenders are not worth it. They are just crippled version of the router with less ports, less memory etc.

I have seen one with the WAN port physically removed instead of having 5 LAN ports.

Absolutely true..tried a few on Amazon ...works like crap if connects...

Solution : DD WRT on TP-Link A7...Perfect!!

Qualcomm Atheros is the way forward.

Is there a reason you say this? With Atheros you’re stuck with SFE. With Broadcom you get CTF and Flow Acceleration which are significantly faster than SFE.

Like already mentioned, Broadcom are mostly closed source drivers only very little is opensource from those guys where router HW is concerned..

In any case, If the router has an excellent CPU at decent clock speeds and decent amount of RAM, it should be able to handle 1Gbps symmetric WAN connection even without CTF/FA and just using SFE. Or some router which offloads the process to some dedicated chip, but consumer routers are generally using outdated technologies and dont really use additional chips for this (only for Wifi where QCAM is concerned but not many user devices support QCAM). (read about planned obsolesce).

Atheros or any chipsets and radios that have opensource drives is the only way to provide a maintainable Firmware without resorting to Kafkaesque processes in order to gain access to closed source nonsense.

So, out of curiosity, are there any Mesh Network Hardware options that support open source or do they all require manufacturers firmware?

Already answered in this post with various DD-WRT recommended hardware with WDS and Mesh support.

For QCA or MediaTek triband extenders, no guarantees but donating would place possibilities on the table.
