Historically, I had ExpressVPN on this device, but recently took it back to Netgear's latest: V1.0.4.36_10.0.93 And way before that, it appears that it was a Charter device as their label ins still on it, however, there was no trailing CH. It might also have been a Spectrum, but I've tried every scenario I can think of.
I've reset by erasing from the GUI, as well as I've held the reset button until my fingers bled, but nothing seems to take when I try to flash with the CHK files. I get a Failure notification and

.
The files I'm trying use to perform the initial flash are:
Not that it should make any difference, I'm using a Mac and tried Safari first, then Chrome. And I'm connected by Ethernet cable to the R6300 with an IP of 192.168.1.8 on the MB Pro.
I just got a charter r6300v2 that had asuswrt-merlin. After bricking it trying change the board_id from U12H240T70_NETGEAR [charter] to U12H240T00_NETGEAR [netgear] from within asuswrt-merlin, I was able to put kong's initial charter build from here on it through tftp.
If you have telnet access enabled with this, you could find your board_id "nvram get board_id" and choose the corresponding build.
I went back to netgear stock V1.0.4.36_10.0.93 (same as OP) to change the board_id to U12H240T00_NETGEAR. When trying to later install a kong r6300v2 initial version I got the exact same error as OP. Installing factory-to-dd-wrt.chk from here worked.
