Yeah, I forgot to ask which "latest builds" of DD you were referring to, @Brett Glass lol
Every one I tried, including the most recent, the one before that, one that's about a year old (39267) which I use in many of my routers because it's stable, and one older than that (30709). Not one of them worked.

Trying it now. Will know within a day how stable it is. Thank you!
You're welcome. I only have so much control over development, but you can always check in over on the linksysinfo.org forums and ping the development threads. I've been looking through a lot of things and noticing some things that haven't been worked on yet. I usually give pedro and M_ars input when I see things. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

I forgot about John's fork. Thanks for that, although there is a lot of development upstream that has not been merged to his fork, apparently. I guess we'll see how well my FT beta image worked soon enough. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

With busbybox 1.25.1 and a bunch of old packages that have not been updated or patched for years. The FreshTomato folks are slowly working forward on that, there are still pieces and parts that need attention, so it's still a work in progress. A lot of people keep bumping random requests to add things that require 3.x kernels and/or kernel headers and/or updated toolchains without knowing the ramifications of these requests or work involved. I need to look into building new toolchains to test. Anyhow... yes, it is solid and works but. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Status report: Those Fresh Tomato 2020.3 beta builds do work - both the slim "VPN" build and the "AIO" build with lots of bells and whistles. They're not perfect (at first, I couldn't change the port on which the Web server listened), and there's no way to disable the reset button to keep Uncle Joe the Self-Proclaimed Computer Expert from messing things up whilst trying to "fix" the router. But PPP-based WAN protocols work reliably, as does the wireless.
Don't know why DD-WRT doesn't work, but at least this is a workaround until it does!

I would have to look into the mess of code DD is. I did notice that there were commits that I presume are related to VPN server certificates, so hopefully no issues with VPN client on either image. If so, I can always pull the updates and run new images. I'm currently waiting to see if the MIPS branch is caught up with ARM on other updates. I never know, since the ARM branch usually takes precedence _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Well, any help we can get in obtaining secure, reliable third party firmware for routers such as this one would be MUCH appreciated! Another router on which the published DD-WRT builds fail completely is the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND. None of the DD-WRT builds for this router (any version) will even flash, much less run.
Similarly, on the TP-Link TL-WR940N (all versions), support for the built-in Ethernet switch is broken. The LAN ports can each communicate with the CPU and the Wi-Fi but not with one another, which is incredibly frustrating if you have, say, a networked printer.
Better support for these Atheros-based routers would help a great deal. We would be glad to donate hardware to any project that will get these routers working 100%.

I have been following this issue. I noticed a missing line of code from the older 3.2 / 3.5 kernels that didn't migrate to the 3.10+ kernels that is likely part of the issue. BrainSlayer has (so far) overlooked my pointing at it. Feel free to chime in on this ticket: https://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/5578 and provide proof of issues. I just found the thread we were discussing this in over on Atheros forum, I knew I wasn't losing my mind thinking we had discussed this already lol https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=152738 _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Just flashed to latest build (42847) and can confirm this issue still exists.
Hopefully a resolution will be provided soon.
I hope so! I'd really like to be using DD-WRT on Atheros-based routers.
BTW, tried the Fresh Tomato 2020.2 build for the Tenda A15 (a brand which DD-WRT, for some reason, doesn't support at all) but it wouldn't flash. I wonder if they've locked out third party firmware....
Looks like there are two problems with the A15. Not only does it appear that third party firmware won't load through the GUI (though this might be bypassed by using their "unbricking" procedure); it looks as if third party operating systems such as Tomato do not turn on the amplifier chips, cutting the transmit power dramatically. (It should be possible to find out how to enable the amplifiers by connecting a VOM to the circuit board and doing a sweep of the memory mapped I/O space.)
