I wouldn't use 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1 is faster and more reliable no matter what they tell you. If you test them yourself (unless the fixed it recently) you will see it plain as day.

There are two setting in the basic setup GUI page of ddwrt , unbound DNS and forced DOT. Are they also related to smart DNS config?
Forced DNS redirect / Forced DNS DOT redirect are related to the router's firewall rules. It's to catch any LAN clients trying to use any other DNS servers other than those specified by dnsmasq, unbound, smartdns if I am not mistaken.
FYI: dnsmasq ≠ unbound ≠ smartdns and you should probably do a little reading up on what does what and how it affects things. I don't know anyone using unbound with smartdns... _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Thank you. I am running yestdays build on 7800. In relation to the above question, If DNSmasq needs to be off while running smart dns, I will then do a clean reset. Please let me know?
Thank you found the answer

both works combined since we still need dnsmasq for dhcp. and you can also combine smartdns with unbound"

@the-j0ker: please read back through pages 3 forward, at the very least. It's literally already been discussed with @hifiboy. This is becoming cumbersome. Enjoy. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Wow, this has all been interesting reading. I was about to give up on trying SmartDNS because I am not a linux command line type of person and I did not want to bork my router. I have already set up a USB NAS with /opt and /jffs partitions. I've looked at the guides in this post that tell how to use CL for set up. Is there going to be a guide on how to set SmartDNS up using the GUI in the near future? or is this all that I need?
Will this use the /jffs partition that I made on my USB hard drive or will it use my router's limited memory? _________________ Netgear XR500 - Gateway

Up and running. Thank you all for all of your work on this. Made it supper easy. I'm using my VPN's DNS plus the other two that were recommended (1.0.0.1 and 9.9.9.9). _________________ Netgear XR500 - Gateway

I guess you can stop using the VPN DNS and use only the ones you trust, as with DDWRT DNSmasq/SmartDNS (DNS) gets inside the VPN tunnel, especially if you use encrypted DNS...SmartDNS
you just have to add those lines to advanced VPN box
pull-filter ignore "dhcp-option DNS"
pull-filter ignore "dhcp-option DNS6"
those lines will ignore the VPN DNS's
and will let only the SmartDNS to be used...depends on your DNS selection there... _________________ Atheros
