It has been a few years since I have had to mess with the R7000. Only when I upped my modem speed did I notice the Upstream throughput was very low, and subsequently discovered the router had a past history with this issue that was corrected by firmware.
So you recommend
1> doing a reset (hold the reset button for 10 seconds or use the factory reset from the GUI menu?) which will clear all the settings.
2> Next flash with the latest firmware from your ftp link.
3> Then I can reenter all my previous settings....if they apply to this version of firmware. Right?
Sounds like I have my work cut out for me , since I have openVPN, VLANs, Guest network, passwords, firewall etc.

yep all manually...do a reset after update, and than enter your settings...
