First time on the forum, so sorry in advance.
I have a TL-WR841N V8, im only using it as a switch and ap (so most things are disabled because it is not connected to the internet).

The recomended build is working great, but should i install an older build in order to get better performance?

If the build is working "great" you should not see bad performance (build related). Bad settings and hardware limits performance. Keep in mind that your WR841 is designed for internet speeds up to 100 Mbit with factory firmware.
Factory firmware is often based on old kernels with optimized drivers build for single hardware support, this lowers the CPU performance requirement. dd-wrt needs a little more CPU power compared to factory firmware.

Create a new topic if you think your AP needs "tuning".
This topic is collecting info for "good" dd-wrt builds on older/low end hardware.

If you cannot ping between LAN ports
-> ping LAN <-> LAN (destination unreachable)
or use Uplink to internet router on one LAN port (WAN disabled):
TP-Link WR84x and WR94x models with 4 port LAN need fix:
-> goto Administration - Commands, enter/copy the 3 following commands into the Commands box:

swconfig dev switch0 set reset 1
swconfig dev switch0 set enable_vlan 1
swconfig dev switch0 set apply

Select "Save Startup" button and reboot device.

Currently running 46690 on all the TL-WR*4*N*s in my inventory. If you wish to have fragattack protection, this is likely the build to go with for now. People need to start flashing and reporting; this thread is great, but could stand to be cleaned up a bit.

I see the v2 & v5 is on your list. This thread does not apply to v4?

C7 v3 is basically a C7 v2 (US) with different factory firmware to my knowledge
C7 v5 is basically a C7 v4 with only one USB

The mainboards on v4 and v5 seem identical to me, only difference is the amount of usb connectors on the back.

You need to flash the v4 build but it should be running equal to the same v5 build for the v5 hardware.

Thank you for this update. I try to keep (at least one) eye on the topic. Fragattack is only possible within your wifi range and are really hard to use, cve shows medium issue, if you don't feel comfortable with older build, or your wifi is exposed to a lot of people due to your living environment, the newest (good) build is the way to go.

A much bigger issue is (for me...) the amount of wifi capable client hardware (win, android, iOS, tv os, network players, IoT devices like webcams and much more) not getting security firmware updates from manufacturer. And the operators behind the device for shure, as most of us don't work for IT security company (!)

I still own android 5.1 and 7.1 based devices, network players, TV's, Sat/Settop Boxes and more not getting firmware updates since years.
Because I don't want to trash them all (major brands like Google, Motorola, Panasonic, Samsung...) this is my major issue.

Since some time TP-Link's way of hardware maintenance seem to remove some LEDs or (one) USB (a few cents less hardware costs) and release the result as new version. I personally prefer increased RAM, FLASH space on new hardware version

Currently running 46750. I am only flashing key public releases or alphas from the private server. This thread should likely get some cleanup eventually, so as not to confuse people or digress into a 200-page cesspool.

I have stripped some parts from the main post, if some visitors feel other parts unnecessary or unuseful, I will strip more.

I wasn't necessarily referring to the main post.

Old faithful fall-back build was r37961 on most devices; one caveat, though. Not sure you can webflash upgrade from that build, so it may require CLI upgrade. I am currently on 47135 on all my low-bang TP-Links.

Currently running 47225 across the board; the only orphan(s) still is(are) the un-flashable TL-WR1043Nv5 and perhaps all the unofficially supported devices (I lost track of how many there are). I encourage everyone following this thread to flash and report in the build threads; this thread is for input but shouldn't be a one-stop reference.

Currently shaking down 47305; Folks need to be more proactive in this thread / reporting in the build threads.
