Collecting some info about different atheros devices at one topic that helps to decide what beta build should be used for a specific atheros device when migrating from stock firmware to dd-wrt on low end "budget" devices with small flash, memory or single core cpu.

build specific recommendations posted:

Do NOT flash directly from openwrt/similar firmware to dd-wrt, reset your installed firmware first and go back to factory firmware carefully read instructions for your device.
Direct flashing is known to brick routers like Archer C7 (v2-v5) and others. Check your hardware version (US or International/Global/EU) first.

Do not expect same speed with dd-wrt (openwrt...) compared to factory firmware on low end old single core main cpu chipset hardware. Factory firmwares are build for a specific main chipset and use chipset optimized (older) kernels.

Speed may vary between dd-wrt builds, see:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=331650&sid=497d8291bde2cb3b31133d5cbe50dfe8

r40559 build from database with lots of issues don't flash, use recommended or reported working build

Do NOT flash r41027! If you already flashed this build with GUI issues, do NOT reset settings update to recommended build

see as example
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=321282
or
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1056400

avoid builds r406xx to r40723 reset button accidental disabled, if GUI reset and telnet does not work you run into problem to reset / nvram erase settings

builds r401xx and r40890 to r41379 have bugged GUI (Reset, Upgrade not working) you have to reset or update/downgrade such build within the telnet/ssh shell.

r41418, r41459 the GUI is working again (Reset and Upgrade)
-> additional WPA3 config in wireless security
-> less free RAM, check for low memory issues

r41468 and some following use updated kernel introducing unusable or instable wlan on some devices. Build r42514, r42819 and some following builds seem more stable with wlan on some dual band routers. Check the build thread postings regarding WLAN issues for your model and version.

r442xx and newer bs implemented new qca based wifi drivers, replacing the candelatech. These wifi drivers need adaptation so this is a work in progress atm. Usability depends on the wifi chips used, read carefully the build thread for info regarding your device before flashing a r442xx or newer build. If you try such build please post (wifi) issues on the corresponding build thread. The new wifi driver may need different default settings to start configuration gateway/router/client :
Wireless Network Mode -> Mixed , Channel Width -> Dynamic

r448xx to r451xx not usable on a lot of (budget) devices, BS changed Wifi drivers again and is cleaning/optimizing code inside GUI and system, this is a work in progress introducing new issues read carefully the posts in the build thread. Do not use them for migration from stock to dd-wrt or update on common budget devices like C7 /A7. Last confirmed usable is r44715, for more recent builds on low end hardware you should check the build threads (read recommendations for known good builds)
Keep in mind, that any usage of RAM and CPU consuming services like QoS, VPN, USB file sharing reduces speed on hardware below dual core CPU and 128M RAM hardware

WDS connects seem unstable on a lot of builds newer than r46220, keep that in mind if you need it. The build
r47695 seems more stable with WDS
r48954 was reported working with WDS between TL-WR841 devices

WOL (WakeOnLan) removed on 4M builds newer than r40439

No OpenVPN on 4M builds (you need device with 8+ M flash, for decent vpn speed a dual core > 1 Ghz CPU is required, depending on your ISP speed)

broken https support for WebGUI on 4M builds

build r33375 and older cannot be upgraded by WebUI, you need to install firmware by shell or revert to factory firmware, reset settings and install newer build factory to dd-wrt.
-> https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=311642

Security

For WLAN fragattack fixes check out build r46690 or newer.

If your device is directly accessible from internet, or his wifi is exposed to a lot of drive by devices or neighbors, you should use/upgrade to a recent/newest (security patched) build.
If you can recommend a (more) recent build for a listed hardware, please post it. Thanks

recommended version r41791
reported good build r41113
last reported working builds r47206, r47618 (usb-smb still problematic)

Other C7 versions :
C7 v3 is basically a C7 v2 (US) with different factory firmware to my knowledge
C7 v5 is basically a C7 v4 with only one USB to my knowledge
-> You have to use VANILLA firmware on new C7 builds, the dd-wrt WLAN firmware is not able to handle 5G atm.

La Fonera 2100 (flash always with TFTP or FonFlash app from Gargoyle)
recommended version r40750
reported working r41459, r42819

La Fonera 2201 (fonera+)
recommended version r43443

Usage info:

If you use configurations based on router mode, you should avoid "assign WAN port to switch" and disable the WAN port if there is no need for an additional LAN port. LAN ports use a specific switch chip, but WAN and WLAN are part of the main chip in most circuit designs.
-> feature was removed in builds r46788 and newer

Avoid QoS on a single low speed core 32M RAM device
you need as much free RAM as possible and build r40527 or older, recommended hardware upgrade for modern internet speeds, check the build threads for info.
Devices with >32M RAM :
-> QoS Problem on old build try HTB+PIE r44715, r44849 (possible wifi issue)
You will see ~20% speed decrease compared without QoS

On some TP-Link internal 4 port (100Mbit) LAN switch chips the LAN <-> LAN port communication does not work out of the box (destination unreachable), only LAN and WLAN -> WAN (internet) is working. (Check that if you use a LAN port on a WR84x or WR94x based AP for uplink)

known working fix for TP-Link (WR84x and WR94x models):
-> goto Administration - Commands, enter/copy the 3 following commands into the Commands box:

swconfig dev switch0 set reset 1
swconfig dev switch0 set enable_vlan 1
swconfig dev switch0 set apply

Select "Save Startup" button and reboot device.

On WLAN issues:

Transmit power / Channel range: both related to the Wifi domain "country" selected by driver, and wifi chip/circuit limits on mainboard. On transmit power issue try a build with different wifi driver (check with recommended builds first)

don't use auto channel
-> 2.4G with lot of autochannel routers around you may end with a bunch of channelhopping routers.
-> 5G autochannel may select a channel not supported by some clients
use n (or n/ac) wlan clients, avoid / replace old b (11Mbit) or g (54Mbit) only hardware connected to same device
avoid clients with weak WLAN (i.e USB WLAN Sticks with internal antenna or by location), relocate your device if possible or upgrade with external antenna / repeater/ powerline.

on 5 Ghz

start with channel 36 or 44 (less used at your location) and 40Mhz on success try auto or 80Mhz. On some builds the WebUI is allowing invalid settings. Check that you choose a valid combination with VHT80: 36+UU,40+UL,44+LU,48+LL are valid nonDFS settings.
see https://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/5699

80Mhz configurations:
-> builds prior to r42174 UI setting of base & extension channel setting often differ from activated channels on 5G
-> builds from r42174 to r42359 UI selected extension channels may be opposite to activated ext. channels
-> builds starting with r42542 the UI setting should match the used settings.
Both WebUI issues -> high possibility resulting in invalid 80Mhz settings for (some) clients. You should verify that you get a valid channel combination activated, use a wifi scanner tool on a 2+ antenna 80Mhz wifi client (pc/laptop preferred)

on 2.4 Ghz:

start with 1 or 6 or 11 (select channel that is surrounded from external WLAN's with the weakest signal, giving best possible space to external WLAN's with the highest signal and 20Mhz (full), with N only clients at 40Mhz (Wide)

Set wireless network mode to NG-Mixed (since r45727 broken use Mixed) and

"Short GI" enabled for speed with all n and newer (144/150+ Mbit) clients**
"Short Preamble" enabled (for every g, n and ac cappable hardware/driver except historic b 11 Mbit clients)
"WMM support" enabled (optimize handling) nessesary for faster speeds with n or newer
"Noise Immunity" disabled (for compatibility with non Atheros/Qualcomm WLAN clients)
"Airtime Fairness" disabled if all your WLAN clients get a decent signal and speed compared to the max. supported on the hardware you may not need/use that support for weak/very slow clients, try disabled and enabled and compare speed on crucial clients, enabled it could break connection to some less compatible (IoT) devices

**"Short GI" disabled (compatibility to b/g only (54 Mbit) clients.
"Short GI" disabled AND "Short Preamble" disabled compatibility to b only (11 Mbit) clients.

***n clients reporting 72Mbit max do not use a second antenna stream or 40Mhz, check the hardware description and driver settings. Devices with small cases, cheap n, ac WLAN adapters, a lot of mobile phones and USB WLAN sticks use only one antenna (1x1) for 2.4G (max. 150Mbit/40Mhz) or 5G (max. 150Mbit/40Mhz, 300Mbit/80Mhz).

Use the same wireless security setting and shared key compatible to 2.4 AND 5 ghz clients:

WPA2 (Personal) CCMP-128 AES

40 Mhz Wide Take note that the Wide extension channel (4 channel upper or lower) is not used by a strong external WLAN

don`t go beyond 10-15 concurrent WLAN connections on a standard (single core) router, you may need to split connections to a second device at a different location.

In real world in my not crowded live environment (10m/32 feet away from router, same room) the 2.4 Ghz WLAN N 300Mbit/s connected to common Wifi Adapters (2x2) speed is max around 85Mbit/s, so nothing is broken if you cannot exceed that speed. There are a few (notebook) Wifi adpaters using 3 internal antenna, that may go close/beyond 100Mbit/s conneted with 450Mbit (3x3) or better router, but they are rare.

additional info:

upgrade/downgrade from/to much older build (some month or previous year) , check that telnet and ssh access possible before flashing, the WebUI access may fail, and it is nessesary to reset settings from shell.

low memory issue* -> If the router gets idle (LAN ports inactive, WLAN clients inactive-> nightly, early morning) the system allocates additional RAM, it some cases it could crash, then go to older build with more free RAM.If you have always active (LAN) clients connected, memory allocation seems ok.
If not resolvable with recommended build -> try build r37961

i haven't seen any positive outputs on the new builds threads regarding those units for an ages....
hmmm, do we know what is your device??....is it supported...at all..???
For all those needs above, you need a more capable device than a low flash size router...

new builds are here
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/

good router's Netgear R6400, R7000, R7800...

Thank you for quick response.
My intension is to spend a "second live" for those devices with aged/limited manufacturer firmware. Buying new hi end hardware was never a problem and their firmware is supported by the manufacturer for some time. All the todays "good" routers will be low flash memory devices in a few years.

If a quite new device is not working as expected a warranty exchange or a refund is the way to go for me.
I own a TP Link TL-WR941ND v6, that was now replaced by a 5Ghz capable router/access point. Laying around the device was a first choice for visiting the dd-wrt world.
The WR941ND has changeable antenna, more LAN ports than the small repeater with internal antenna it replaces now on the second floor. The performance increased and the WLAN coverage is better. Why put the router into trash ?

TL-WR941ND v6 (2,4 ghz only, 450M WLAN, 32 MB RAM, 4M flash, 4 100M ports) running on build 40863. It's now used for mobile devices and a tv/printer wire connected.
My decision to start with a 39944 build bypassing later builds due to the limited hardware because I could not find a common recommended beta version for this device here. The r40863 seems more RAM memory friendly compared to r39944

Thank you very much. Appreciate your info

The tl-wr941ndv6 has the same CPU TP9343 (750 MHz) 32 M RAM and 4M flash size compared to tl-wr940ndv6. Did you upgrade from older versions and what was the benefit of the r40863 ?

Someone else with a wr940v3-v6/941v6 with dd-wrt with a recommendation ?

Newer build does not mean better/more stable.

nope, there is no such an animal, new builds could be anything...from a stable to a brick...
depends what for ..if its for a repeater or WAP
than any working build will do..dont need to update..

if you are running DNSmasq stuff on an Edge (Gateway) router and ect, than you need to look at the updates in svn first, if your router is concerned to worth updating...

p.s. yep those units are excellent WAP/switch, but nothing else...those few with 700Mhz + CPU can do
a light AP, (Gateway) stuff depend on ISP speed, and
number of client's...
No VPN on those units !!

Appreciate your comment.
No space for VPN on my devices flash and no power on the CPU . WR941NDv6 and similar WR940v3-v6 devices are good for the 50M down/10M or 100M down/40M up vectoring lines as access point or repeater behind the main router.
The user experience of dd-wrt is better if you start into dd-wrt with a known good or a recommended build for a specific device, avoiding latest builds and build related bricks. Do you agree ?

WR941NDv6 and similar WR940v3-v6 are for those
speeds
...this is true...
than, as i said looking for a stable build, its a try'n'err...
do you know, how to recover if it bricks...
than you can try any build...

if you don't read svn and don't follow the threads,
than you relay on someone to be a "kind hearted"..and
tell you "yep this build is stable" ..and than, it turns up, it was stable for his set up, but not for yours...all builds in constant beta stage...

Did someone try more recent builds as mentioned in these posts on any 4M flash/32M RAM devices that are usable/stable running as AP or router ?
Or just stay away and buy better hardware?

i use almost the last builds on my 740v4, v1 both working as it should, they are even better... Wink ..
But to remind you!!
Do not flash your unit, if you do not know how to recover it Wink last builds in my sig work well for basic setup or WAP...

well, some ppl complain about certain thing always...so beta is beta...!

Thank you for your info. Please share some more comment on:
r42054 / r42132 "they are even better ..."
whats the benefit on these builds you encountered on your WR740N (350Mhz CPU / 150M WLAN) as both versions are 4M flash and 32M RAM device ? The WR940NDv3-v6/WR941NDv6 with the 750Mhz CPU and 450M WLAN seem to be minimum requirement for "standard lines" to me ....

hmm can i define "better"...
better GUI access, https support as well some new fixes...you can have a look on SVN if you follow it...

To be honest i stayed on an old build for those units
for a long time, as WAP/switch mode doesn't need a new updates...
currently updated those out of curiosity...and they work with my minimum set up...one as a WAP the other is a Gateway with basic set up...

as far as WR940NDv3-v6/WR941NDv6 i don't know how the development goes this days, but my encounter with a friend WR940 series was equal to stay away from those...was not happy with DDWRT (in the past)...
had to revert to its stock firmware at the end....
not sure if they get the necessary attention from BS this days...4MB flash size is low...

as a minimum gateway(AP) device I always been a fan of 1043v2 8MB flash size.... great unit, excellent support...stability...performance...price
not sure what's wrong with WR 940 series, but they have that new 750 CPU..as 1043v4 and v5 and still haven't seen a positive reports on those...
so, if the code is not broken they should be a decent (as a performance)...

just stick to a build that is working and if you want to explore another build, read here and there, wait and see if reports are coming or at least before you flash, make sure you know how to unbrick ....

The reason i haven't updated my 740's to the last builds is, as im currently away, but will do once im back...

hmm can i define "better"...
better GUI access, https support as well some new fixes...you can have a look on SVN if you follow it...

Most of the addons and fixes don't apply to these 4M flash devices WR940NDv3-v6/941NDv6 and similar as there is no openvpn, USB - Samba, wireguard, 5G and more, but they harm WLAN stability, performance, usability on these chipsets.

The r40750/r40863 are the last tested and confirmed usable to me, did not test the lastest builds, as I see no benefit, only problems if I read the posts.
End of days for this hardware is close...

the problem is not in the hardware, but more likely peoples understanding/believe of the word "ROUTER"...

the word ROUTER always has a bad relation with the word "CHEAP"... Razz

"CHEAP" and "ROUTER" for me is related to low CPU power, FLASH, RAM, missing USB(3) , reduced LAN ports, non detachable antenna, slow WLAN, bad Modem on Cable/DSL modemrouters,
that's quite equal on 4+ years old hardware...
I don't use samba / USB on a router, I prefer a dedicated NAS with WOL
