Hello.

I'm having intermittent disconnects on my R6900. I have been for months. I have read on the Netgear forums of many people having firmware issues on this model and other models, having to revert back to older versions in many instances.

Because of this, I thought it might be a good idea to flash DD Wrt on my router, as I did on my WRT54G many years ago with much success.

Is DD WRT updated for this model of router? Is it worth doing this with a model as old as mine?

Thanks.

1) I don't think there is direct official support for the R6900:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=301328

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/Supported%20Models

2) Is it a V1 or V2? V2 is a MediaTek device:

How can I figure out if it's V1 or V2?

I saw r6900p in the text file on the 3rd link you posted.

Also, if it's V1, can I do the procedure to make it think it's an R7000? If so, is the DD WRT version for that stable?

Thanks.

My best guess is by firmware version on the router as far as what version it is:

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/R6900#download

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/R6900v2#download

I only know so much. I don't have either version of the 6900, nor a 6900P, or a 7000. Just passing on the information I can find...

Based on firmware version compared to Netgear website for each type, it is a V1.

Have you heard about people changing the board number, or what not, to make it identify as an R7000?

Thanks for the help and prompt replies.

I don't recall anyone recently asking about this particular situation prior to your post.

What does the label on the back of the router say?

It says R6900. Firmware version on the router also matches R6900V1 on Netgear's website.

I was reading about converting a R6900 to R7000. Has anyone done that recently?

If its a v1 its a R7000, did you try flashing directly from stock using a ddwrt firmware for R7000?

I have R6900P and All i had to do was flash it using R7000P ddwrt firmware. Same might work for you, just flash your R6900v1 with R7000 ddwrt firmware and see if its accepted.

Ok. Thanks for the response. That is good to know.

Why does Netgear make different firmware for my router than the r7000? Wouldn't that imply there must be differences?

So I don't need to do any prep? Download the file, then just use the netgear firmware apparatus through my router's interface to install it?

Do you have a link for the file?

Is there a chance of bricking it?

Sometimes its marketing or a version to a specific retailer, could be missing a usb port (one instead of two).

There is always chance of brick but i don’t see much risk here,

Looking at below link

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_R6900v1

Units seem identical, i would just flash it from netgears stock ui and see how it goes.

This is latest from Kong, you can try it:

http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/TEST/dd-wrt.K3_R7000.chk

Follow the flash by an nvram erase

Thanks, man.

How do I do the nvram erase? I should do that after? Just want to make sure I'm using the latest method.

You should search a bit, from wiki:

Using DD-WRT with Telnet (or SSH) for builds after 18 Apr 2018:
nvram erase && reboot

Keep in mind, you may have to roll back to an older version of Netgear firmware for it to take a flash. https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_R7000

Thanks. So the reboot part of the command is still advised?
