I'm on DD-WRT v3.0-r40270M kongac (07/11/19).

I have SFE enabled and the Firewall disabled. And yet the router is STUCK at 100 mbps. I restart it, it gets better for a few minutes, then internet drops out for a bit and after that we're back at 100 mbps.

My connection isn't even gigabit, just 300mbps, so software nat shouldn't be a problem, at least based on this page: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_R7000
Even non-SFE should be fine...

I tried erasing nvram, reflashing, but it didn't help.

The R7000 hasn't had a 3.10 kernel in a while. What kernel version does the router status page report, what does `uname -a` via telnet / ssh report?

And, unfortunately, you're only 'upgrade' option is to use the latest BrainSlayer build as <Kong> is no longer developing DD-WRT builds.

Linux 4.4.185 #670 SMP Thu Jul 11 02:19:39 CEST 2019 armv7l

I actually tried flashing one of the latest brainslayer builds too, same deal.

It's because a restart fixes for a while that I keep thinking it's the router and not the ISP.

But then again, I've had the router work without any problems(and at high speed) on kong build ~33000 or somesuch for years. (I did flash back to that build too, and it didn't help.)

The situation is messing with my usual line of reasoning when troubleshooting...

Latency and other fun in the 4.x kernels seems to be an issue, but I was under the impression that <Kong> had fixed that in his builds. I presume that you are testing over wired ethernet with the network completely quiet with only your test client connected.

I guess I'm going to have to dig into 40270M on my recently-acquired R7000P. Not that it's a legitimate comparison perhaps, but.

Change Ethernet cables.

You may have a flaky one that negotiates a 1000BASE-T link, but then falls back to 100BASE-T.

Sounds like one of the three....or all the above....

1: Bad ethernet cable between your R7000 & the modem or the moddem/router provided by the ISP

2: Modem does not support gigabit ethernet

3: ISP combo unit does not support gigabit ethernet

Looks like the connection is failing the gigabit ethernet cable test shortly after reboot....

10/100 only uses 4 of the 8 wires while gigabit uses all 8

What color is the wan port at the top of the Gui webif page? ...Setup/VLANs?
Green is gigabit.....yellow id 10/100

And going back to discussion in another thread, if the ISP equipment interface is 10/100, the ports on the router should auto-negotiate unless the cabling is suspect or something in the firmware is BROKEN. BUT, I suspect that if the ISP is providing 300mb/s, the ethernet port on their equipment should be gigabit-capable, given that the speeds were previously achieved. SO, it could be a suspect cable, indeed.

That is the most plausible hypothesis I've seen so far.

My other ones I feel are rather unlikely:
1. Either the router somehow "partially" broke.
2. The ISP is doing something on their end that causes the connection to revert to 100 mbps after a few minutes.

I will check the cable.

yep its a "try and err" like situation....
try to restart the modem, try another cable, try different wi-fi/ wired client, than try to reset rebuild manually...
yep do not turn off firewall...no much sense ...

I have not moved on... plz do not lock!

I've tested the cables.
Basically, I tested with a 2nd client:
1. Speedtest still caps out at 100mbps on the 2nd.
2. My PC to the 2nd client maintains 1gbit easily.

This, according to my understanding, is strong evidence that the problem does not lie in the router <-> my PC cable.

It might still be the ISP's cable, or the router somehow.

Well?? What color is it.....I bolded & enlarged the question....to help you see it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ignored this because I do not understand what I'm looking for.

Maybe you know better, here's a screenshot of the web ui:

AFAIK, what the Doc is talking about is ---

WAN port plugged into 10/100 switch

same unit has WAN port plugged into 10/100/1000 switch

Something that doesn't even work on (newer) K2.6 builds, the visual indicators. That whole part of the GUI is grey. But not sure if it has to do with wan disabled and client bridge mode on that particular router. I haven't reset it and started over to see if it stays that way or not.

I made a simple picture to ensure we're on the same page with how things connect together.

You recently performed TEST 1, confirming client 1 can talk to client 2 at 1Gbps speeds. Using the same configuration, confirmed client 2 only gets 100Mbps connection to the internet. This confirms the cable between your client(s) and the R7000 are capable of a Gbps connection.

In TEST 1, did you change the cable that connects your R7000 to your ISP device (orange link in the picture)? If not, this cable is still suspect and should be the next focus.

Moving on to TEST 2, have you tried connecting a client directly to your ISP device to perform a speed test? Try this, using the cable you found to be capable of Gbps speeds with your R7000. If you get speeds greater than 100Mbps on this test, this points to the cable/ports which connect the R7000 and ISP device. If you don't get speeds greater than 100Mbps, this isolates the problem to the ISP device.

Thanks @mrjcd for visually clarifying what I atempted to describe in words twice.

I would have answered myself earlier...but I was trying to chill & keep from lowering myself & answering the ignorent "bla..bla..Maybe they're smart enough to figure out what that means" comment about their redundantly outdated certificate still hanging upstairs on mom's fridge...Rolling Eyes ¯\(°_o)/¯
