Minor point: I notice that Yemble is in the UK and is responding to a user whose country is not identified. So... If you happen to be in the US and using VHT80/UU on 5 GHz, your only choices of channel are 36 and 149. Anything else gets into a big reserved set of channels (for radar?) in the middle of the band. Enforced in dd-wrt: Channel 36 is limited to 23 dBm output, while channel 149 can use the full 30 dBm of which the routers are capable.

Yes channel selection is a mess and depends highly upon location which I have tried to explain many times. Interestingly there are some quirks to all of this;
On US builds channel 100 will operate up to 160mhz spread but at reduced output. Ironically, what I discovered recently is that if one chooses to operate a VAP from a Client setup router, it automatically defaults to channel 100 regardless what the master is using which means that the VAP appears to not work off a client router. If the master is on 100 the VAP works fine.
Also if you look at the chart https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
you will notice that the block you refer to (Channel 100+) is available for use in the US but only with DFS right up to 160z spread. Unfortunately for myself in Canada I can only use 36+ for 160 even though my 3200's will work on 100+, it is discouraged according to the chart.
As best I can determine, the 3200 and 32X are the only ones DFS certified , but my 1900's and 1200 will operate on channel 100+ as clients without problem although take advantage of the higher power on 149+ because I have a 1900 remote client at 500'. I'm curious as to what the interface names are in default factory linksys firmware. These are Marvell units, not Atheros. Could it be another cross-pollination problem mixing and matching vendor drivers and such gone horribly wrong? Just my random thoughts....
I just ordered a wireless doorbell. Would I need to connect with the VAP or can I just connect to the regular Wi-Fi? If I do need to use the VAP I will need to make a 5 GHz VAP as well with the WMM disabled. My guess is I won't need to coddle the doorbell like I did the smart bulbs and sockets?
The VAP solution fixed all my problems with smart devices such as lightbulbs, outlets and my Logitech Harmony hub.
it helped a lot with pairing, but after a while my devices still disconnect/reconnect randomly making them unreliable.
Weird I have had no issues with mine. And as far as my last post about the new wireless doorbell I connected it to the regular 5 GHz connection and it seems to work fine.

Glad to hear that you (Kamakzie) are up and running. I suspect that the 5Ghz doesn't have the problem but since I don't have any devices that use the 5Ghz I can't confirm. As best I know the ESP8266 chip is a 2.4 only.
In reference to the problem that is described about dropping and re-connecting, I believe it is a device/server issue and not the router. I see routine dropouts and reconnects both on individual devices and the remote server. This could be that I am on an ADSL line limited to 7 down/0.4 up. AS for the individual devices I have found placement is critical and if they are in close proximity to any other wifi devices they get a bit weird. I do however have all my devices in the static table on my master router which helps with reconnects as the devices don't need to attain a new IP every time. Another thought is that these Smart Devices aren't quite that smart and may not be 100% security compatible with the most recent wifi upgrades, as is seen with many Android devices being posted here about no connects.
Case in point, I did a downgrade on my 1900 V1 to r35898 today because WDS wouldn't work but since the downgrade all my cameras and smart devices have maintained connection without any dropouts. (6 hours and counting)

Yeah I think the 5 GHz band is exempt from the problems. If I ever tried to connect or need to connect the doorbell to the 2.4 I will use the virtual access point.
