Netgear R7800 and XR500 Install Guide

Although the R7800 is not being sold any more and is succeeded by the XR500 which is FCC identical and and can be regarded as a rebranded R7800 (with double the amount of Flash Ram and the new DumaOS), the R7800 is still a very capable router and can be found second hand.

Although the guide was written for the R7800 it also applies mutatis mutandis to the XR500.

v01 first draft
v02 added comments from forum members
v03 added comments from forum members
v04 added comments from forum members
v05 Kong stopped support
v07 added links to Kong's old files
v08 added instructions how to switch between Kong and BS builds
v09 and v10 tidying up
v11 added performance settings and troubleshooting (bad block)
v14 small corrections and clarifications
v17 added some more performance settings and TFTP instructions
v18, v19, v20, v21, v22, v23-v34 some useful links and information
v38-v47 add XR500
v49 Build 52095 has the ability to move rootfs which could mitigate the "Bad Block" problem!

I just read through the whole thing and IMHO you did an outstanding job. It's covered everything I can think of with links. The r7800 has been around for a while so this tutorial timing may be a little off. Very Happy

I got my R7800 time ago, so far so good it works well
Im using Kong Builds ever since http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/

to install
on stock Netgear firmware first do a reset
than via GUI updated with http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/Test/R7800-factory-to-ddwrt.img
than once on DDWRT i used http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/Test/ddwrt-netgear-R7800.bin for update..

once you are happy running, Kong builds you can update via CLI using this command: ddup --flash-remote http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/Test/ddwrt-netgear-R7800.bin

yep...,but on next firmware update you must use .bin file !!!...

Hi!

I would appreciate seeing some configuration suggestions in the guide when it's running dd-wrt. Recommended wifi channels and other setup configurations specific to the model which it might benefit from.

Also; distribute the documentation as a PDF as a lot of people tend not to have a word processor compatible with Microsoft Word and would simply not trust .doc or .docx files Smile

Indeed it is. But it's a generic one. As far as I've seen the R7800 has some router specific workarounds and settings to live it's best life.

Anyhow. Just a feedback. Of course there's the wiki for pretty much anything.

Thanks for your feedback

There are links to configuration options like the one Per Yngve pointed to in the Usefull Information /Wireless settings section

Will have a look if formatting looks any good in PDF

Many thanks egc and others for this excellent guide.
Just upgraded from Archer C5 v1.20 to R7800.
Followed this guide and installed Kong's latest build.
Everything is working smoothly.

Thanks for a very clear guide!

Great guide, kudos to egc!

I use the ReadyCLOUD feature of Netgear. I have hard drive connected via USB to R7800 and I can reach this disk via https://readycloud.netgear.com/client/index.html

Would I lose this functionality after flashing with DD-WRT? If yes then is there any working DD-WRT alternative for accessing a connected USB drive from the internet?

Thanks!

Thanks Smile

DDWRT has no such thing baked in that I know of (it requires you to contact the Netgear website)

There are alternatives however:

What most of us do is make a secure connection to our home network using VPN, via this secure connection you can connect to anything on your network including your USB storage of the router.
This can all be done with DDWRT but requires more setup is perhaps less convenient but you get access to your whole home network and it is more secure.

An other possible alternative is using the baked in DDWRT webserver (lighttpd) with something like owncloud: https://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/fyi-owncloud-on-dd-wrt-kong.72104/

Or if you only want simple file transfer you can use the build in FTP server.

So there are alternatives but be ready for some extra work/setup

Thanks egc. What is your recommended setup that works well with DD-WRT? Ftp sounds good as long as I can access my USD drive at home via a browser from a work laptop where the VPN client is not installed. I presume I can just add my VPN credentials to Windows? Because I am not system admin on my work computer. Thanks!

Hmm, difficult to tell.

DDWRT has ProFTPD which is the built in FTP server, which you can access with your webbrowser.
However FTP is insecure, you can use FTP with SSL/TLS but I do not know how easily it can be setup.

But you can always install different FTP servers on DDWRT.

I once setup the ProFTPD server just for testing and that was just a few mouse clicks, but as said I assume that the connection is insecure (not the login, you need a user and password, but the transport is not encrypted I think)

If you can install a program on your Windows laptop you can install the OVPN client but you probably need admin rights.

I have a QNAP NAS running and I use SFTP to connect to that (in case my OVPN is down), DDWRT can also use SFTP but that also requires a client program (like WinSCP)

So options enough but the necessity to use your webbrowser ties you to FTP I think, but I am no expert in this field.
