have you tired reversing RXD and TXD?
This worked for one of the posters in the thread who had the same problem of debug text flowing across screen and ctrl-c not working.

I fiinally got the Control-C to work and the console came up to the CFE> prompt. Reversing the green and white wires on the Adafruit USB-TTL cable was the thing that finally worked. I assumed that since I was seeing the debug text flowing across the console terminal screen that the RXD and TXD were connected correctly, but somehow the text still made it to my terminal screen while having the two pins reversed. According to the labeled photo of the board above, pin 1 is closest to the back of the board where the power switch and network connections are. So the connections that worked for me are as follows: Red wire not connected and pin 1 not touched. Black wire connected to pin 2 (ground). White wire connected to pin 3. And green wire connected to pin 4. Like one of the other commenters, I was confused about the meaining of RXD and TXD and whether to conntect to RXD of the cable to the TXD of the board or TXD to TXD. The USB-TTL cable I used was Adafruit product number 954 https://www.adafruit.com/product/954 Once the wires were connected to the correct pins, I was able to switch on the router and continueously hit Control-C and after a few seconds got the CFE> prompt. Tomorrow I will try to use the flash command and load a custom firmware with TFTP.

Don’t hook up 3v nor 5v. Only tx, rx and ground. Make sure everything is coonected properly.
You are looking at the picture from myopenrouter? _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
the ftdi cable arrived and i was able to stop the boot process instantly! so it was the "other" serial cable which for the record (in case someone in the future is reading) was a Prolific PL-2303HX USB to Serial Bridge Controller
Now to flash with stock quickly as im going out, then i will flash the DDWRT i want later once im happy its all working again.

Ahhhh, so all you can do is flash the latest 1.0.4.28 I guess, if you have to go to stock.
Might have to go the luci route after all then. Bummer!
I wonder if openwrt have the the fixes (to allow downgrade) into their latest stable firmware yet, or at least their beta. Been a couple of months now since it was reported.
I wish brainslayer of kong could fix this. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

Maybe this will work, from the old 2018 post:
<quote: DaveKenroy>
The only way I could get it to take (as said in my previous posts) is by booting into the router's CFE and using the command "flash -noheader : flash1.trx" then TFTPing the .bin file from a computer hooked up via Ethernet.

Stop the cfe, type tftpd hit, enter and upload the firmware.
If that doesn’t work, stop the cfe and type: flash -noheader : nflash1.trx, hit enter an upload the firmware.
I use tftpd32.

Maybe best to install the latest netgear firmware first though, before attempting this? _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000
