Would anyone know if the Asus RT-AC86U (FCC a.k.a. RT-AC68U Extreme, RT-AC86A, RT-AC86P, RT-AC86R, RT-AC86X, RT-AC2900, AC2900) is being evaluated for placement on the 'Supported Devices' list?
Even better, has anyone attempted to run a build on one?

runs excellent on mine. _________________ My "WRT" rant, and why I have gone ddwrt on x86, no more consumer routers. ( ac86u as access points & bridges )

Thanks for your time and attention in advance.
i recently bought and am quite pleased running stock. they have some network mapping issues but nothing serious enough to interfere with activities. i plan on staying the course as "stock" for now since it exceeds my needs and puts linksys to shame. _________________ asus rt-ac86u stock: 3.0.0.4.384_45149

Is the router DD-WRT compatible?
Anyone knows when a DD-WRT firmware comes out for this router? _________________ Linksys WRT1900ACSv2 - DD-WRT v3.0-r35531 std (03/26/18 )

This AC86U has encrypted cfe so dd-wrt won't be running on it any time soon, if ever. _________________

fwiw, with merlin running as the stock fw, i haven't missed dd-wrt at all! that's not a negative for the fine work done by the dd-wrt folks at all. it's simply a recognition of an alternative (merlin) to dd-wrt that has suited my needs post my 3200acm days.
my use is home and i also run nas and guest services. "guest" is much easier to configure vs dd-wrt. what i really like is the ability to configure an internal domain, if u choose - for free! the router is solid and asus provides selectable security services (see website).
on the downside, i had to switch from 5g to 2.4 for one tv on the extreme end and another floor of the house. the 5g radio signal was too weak and the connection would drop. 2.4 was much faster and stable, so no worries. my other sets run 5g fine.
it's been years since i've been able to "forget" about my router. it's just that reliable. _________________ asus rt-ac86u stock: 3.0.0.4.384_45149

I know LookingForMyMojo, 05dyna, and yourself speak highly of the Rt-AC86U, so when I got an E-mail blast from Micro Center yesterday for 2 AC86U'S for $299 after $40 mail in rebate I drove down there that morning.
Only been up and running for a day but so far so good!!
I do miss DD-Wrt, because of the fact I've been using it for 10 years and know it inside and out.
There will be a learning curve for me with Merlin, but with time I shall persevere.
I think the sale lasts all month.

looking.,.. is da man, k! he's a guru for very good reason. i'm running just over 5 mos with this box now and i run the "stock" code. asus support appears to be quite responsive with monthly fixes. for my personal use, i prefer merlin's better looking and ease of use interface over dd-wrt.
i have one tv at the opposite end of the house that gets a weak 5g signal, but 2.4 is more than adequate for that set's needs. i can stream 4k on multiple sets concurrently! did i mention that my ac86u is upstairs behind a closed wooden cabinet?
. . . so no, i'm good with asus and will say rip linksys - already sold 1. _________________ asus rt-ac86u stock: 3.0.0.4.384_45149

For you newer AC86U / Merlin users, DO NOT schedule a weekly reboot unless you absolutely require it. There's a known bug/glitch in the hardware/CFE where the router sometimes fails to completely reboot. If it happens to you, simply pull the power (or push the power button) and then restore it. _________________ 2x Asus RT-AC68U

i'm using since jan '18 now and have never rebooted. good info though. i feel sorry for my linksys brethren here. life's so much better with an rt86u.

Any chance we could see firmware for this router? It's been out for over a year now, very much miss DDWRT. Merlin is better then stock, but it's not DDWRT.

I asked the folks at PIA awhile back about these routers. They were quite adamant to choose the RT-86U because it supports AES acceleration. Unfortunately I have the RT-87U. It's great that DD-WRT supports my router. There are some advantages for the 87 and 88 models. Perhaps it's the AES acceleration in the 86U model that is causing difficulties for portability? As was said, supported with Merlin.

I use DD-WRT for a 50 site, site to site VPN (OpenVPN) network deployment.
I'm looking for ways to boost the VPN throughput which is capping out at about 20Mbps (Netgear R7000 routers with AES-256-CBC encrypt). I've noticed that all the devices with the Broadcom chips containing hardware encryption are excluded in the list of the DD-WRT devices.
Question for the group...Is the issue of encrypted CFE what's causing these devices with built-in hardware encryption to be excluded from the target list for DD-WRT?
I'm coming to the conclusion that if I want to take advantage of the hardware encryption (ex. AES-NI), I'm going to have to go the route of the X86 version. I'm wondering if anyone might have any other suggestions for increasing throughput and keeping the network costs down.
Thanks for the great work you folks do!! DD-WRT is great stuff!!

A Netgear R7800 should get you around 100 Mb/s throughput on VPN I think, I do not have one, but ask in the Atheros forum about VPN throughput for an R7800.
