Model: TP LINK 1043 ND
Ver: 1.2
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r33772 std (11/16/17)

Try via web.
1) 30/30/30 reset->upgrade newer version
2) 30/30/30 reset->revert
3) 30/30/30 reset->factory defaults->upgrade->30/30/30

Result: No upgrade. No revert.

Any safe suggestions?

That is a very old build. Also, next time post this in a New Build thread. Such as this: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=320097

As for how to upgrade the router. Serial / TFTP is always an option with TP-Link Atheros based routers. You will need to open up the device and attach something like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/954

Newer builds are found here: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2019

I have this router but it is currently bricked and I do not plan on spending the time to debrick it. The hardware is faulty.

Have you looked through the build thread:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=312322

Not saying that there is anything in there but you never know.

Otherwise you may able to look around the same date as that build thread to see if anyone else had similar problems.

ian's options are still on the table
