OK, granted that # of users is a bogus metric (and I would guess that something more like Active IP connections would be better).

But who's got the highest # of users behind a DD-WRT flashed router in both gateway and router mode?

What router, what firmware version, and how many peak Active IP connections have you seen (with what CPU load...if you know it)?

I'll start the ball rolling with a very easy to beat answer:

10 users with DD-WRT v24 RC-7 {04/11/08} vpn on a Netgear WNR834Bv in gateway mode.

p.s. Especially interested to hear what the numbers are in router mode...

I added another user...we are up to 11. Very Happy

Can anybody beat 11 simultaneous users behind a DD-WRT router?

I got 30 once. I got to the max ports pretty quick, but DD-WRT handled it pretty well over all. This was only for about 3 days while we had a conference.

Wouldn't the Speed of the Internet Connection be a useful piece of information as well.

I have had simultaneous 10 Users but with only about 2000kBits/sec Down and 256kBits/sec Up the system was :-

(1) Slow
(2) Rebooted every 30 minutes or so.

WRT54GL 1.1 @ DDWRT v24 build 9517 set to 50 user DHCP but the classroom is only capable of 40 students.

Connected to a 3com Stack 3 configured to 10Base-T/ Class B Network. 3com Stack 3 connected to Fiber Optic cable via FX/Module. No P2P/Torrents since were behind on a proxy server.

27/40 Wireless Clients currently connected but probably in some point it did reach at the exact 40 students in the classroom.

So backroger has the new high with 40 users. Do you know what your Active IP Connection count was, when you were peaking out at 40 DHCP users, backroger?

I'm trying to get a rough scale of what the operational limits are on a DD-WRT flashed router, assuming that the router is a nice piece of newer hardware.

My best guess is that (exclusive of P2P programs), typical users in a business environment use maybe 20 to 50 Active IP connections.

I'm going to throw one of these up in router (not gateway mode) and see if I can get closer to 4,096 Active Connections without having the router fall over.

Last time I checked its about 2k to 2.5k & CPU usage is about 60-65% while the memory is about 750kb-1M free.

Actualy, If I remember correctly, when I ask this forum for the # of user that able to connect using DDWRT, that user said he able to connect more than 50. I couldn't remember the name but he used it as a part of communication/relief operation during Hurricane Katrina.

I may hold the new record with an estimated 150 users behind 31 external IPs/additional routers on the LAN side of an ASUS WL-500gP operating in router rather than gateway mode.

End users are consuming about 10-20 ports per person with the TCP Timeout Setting dropped to 300 and UDP left at 120, which values are probably a pretty good estimate for small office users' port usage. We have Maximum Connections set to 4,096.

We are using a 10 Mbit up/down connection from XO.

Cool

ciao,

jas3

Thanks simkiss- glad I searched before posting- was surprised today when I found that XO doesn't provide router for the 10/10 Ethernet over Copper service and was worried about using my WRT310N. Especially appreciate the timeout info.

Thread is old, but a good topic. I'm hooking up 40 office users behind this and will report back on performance.

I set up a WRT54G-TM router and successfully handled around 20-30 people on a regular basis.

You can find a link to a picture of my configuration here --> http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=28240

Enjoy!
