I am fairly new to using a DD-WRT router and have run into a couple of issues that are causing problems. First, the speed I’m purchasing from Comcast is 175MB however what I’m getting is only 26-60MB. When plugging directly into the modem I get the full speed but coming out of the router I get the reduced speeds. I’m not doing any QOS or Wi-Fi and I’m actually doing very little on the router as I only set it up to obtain device level statistics. The second issues is the CPU load is running very high. If I restart it, it will drop down for a short time before jumping back up to 100%.
Any ideas as to what I might try, would be greatly appreciated otherwise I may be forced to pull it out.

Router Name: DD-WRT
Router Model: Netgear WNR3500L v2
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r38581M giga (02/06/19)
Kernel Version: Linux 3.10.108-d8 #22809 Wed Feb 6 14:05:03 CET 2019 mips
CPU Model: Broadcom BCM5357 chip rev 2
CPU Cores: 1
CPU Features: MIPS32r1 MIPS32r2 MIPS16 DSP DSP2
CPU Clock: 480 MHz
Load Average: 100% - 1.42, 1.48, 1.49
Temperatures: WL0 46.0 °C

Thank you.

First question that I have is it sounds like you are running default correct?

What device level statistics are you referring to? (I know it seems obvious to you but it could me different to me)

On Setup -> Basic Setup, under optional settings, is "Shortcut Forwarding Engine" enabled?

How familiar are you with the command line? (if you are comfortable run top and see what processes are taking up most)

Have you tried a different version of the firmware?

Did you read the build thread from that version?

The 26-60MB is...
1. Mb/s right, not MB/s?
2. Wired?

Unless there's some reason not to use recent builds, first try 42132. From telnet, `nvram erase && reboot` then manually setup.

Why only 42132?

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2020/01-30-2020-r42174/

It would be nice to know if anyone is getting the expected speed of your ISP package with an older MIPS router. Are you using any buffer tweaks or anything special at all?

Because at that time, 42174 only had one report on a k4.4 ARM device, while 42132 had plenty of k3.10 reports. [Of course there have been a couple now on 42174.] I'm happy to flash willy-nilly on my own stuff (lost my own bet messing w/ my OPNsense gateway the other night...leading down a 3hr rabbit hole to fix it) but I'm more hesitant to blindly recommended it to others. Cool

Thank you.

I run the same build on one of my routers and I believe the load number shown in the GUI are incorrectly displayed. If I run 'top' from the command line they are low and reasonable. Does not explain the low throughput though. Have no throughput problem with this build on my ASUS AC68U.

all after that up to the current (DD-WRT v3.0-r42174 std (01/30/20)

Always after a short time 100% CPU load!

If you're going to post in the english forum, at least {Google, etc.} translate it first. Cool

I think the last time I did an actual nvram reset was because of something similar. It was likely around this same time-frame of that build. There have been on-and-off issues with the webUI and such causing strange things happening. I have not seen this happen again here, similar hardware. I'm also running some things that people have clobbered me for, advising against, etc., but have had no issues with my config causing things like this to happen.

From my experience the httpd service tends to lock-up consuming all available CPU time. Try to restart httpd from the shell. Has always changed CPU load for the better for me on such high load scenarios.

Correct Mb/s and it is wired. I've been hesitant to move to a later revision because of concern of other issues. When I set this up, i had seen may comments of this version working well for them.

Yes, i'm running the default.

The stats i'm referring to are just the numbers that represent the system load during the last one, five, and fifteen minute periods.

No the "Shortcut Forwarding Engine" is disabled.

I ran the top command it really only showed the process ksoftirqd using 35% cpu.

I haven't tried another version yet, that will probably be the next thing I try.
Thanks.

So enable SFE, that will speed things up, otherwise all of the processing is done on each packet which causes higher cpu load.

personally I think that the gui stats on those are not always correct

I believe that enabling this did the trick. My CPU has dropped down and my internet speed is now pushing around 180Mb/s.

Thank you very much.

I enabled the SFE and now it appears that my data totals show large variances from what's at the router. From what i've been reading, turning this on can cause that. Is that correct?
Does that mean I ether have to suffer with incredibly slow speeds or incorrect data reporting? Both of the options cause a pain.
