Research the build threads. What specific build to recommend depends on what you intend to do with the device. If you are not going to use any client modes whatsoever, upgrading to a post-KRACK build is kind of a moot point, save and except for any other security and vulnerability-related updates to packages.
The only two K2.6 builds I know for sure that work well when you get everything set up correctly are 30880 and 35531, but there are things that are probably broken in them, nonetheless. There are several K3.x builds that work with some workarounds.
Honestly, out of the box, 2018.5.083 beta Fresh Tomato is pretty damn stable on Broadcom MIPS. All of my workarounds save and except for gtk renewal for DD-WRT are default features that work without a bunch of monkeying around. GTK renewal in FT works like it should. I'm sure I may take some heat for this last paragraph, but it is what it is.

I jumped it to DD-WRT v3.0-r35244 mega k3, what a improvement! I am having some problems here and there they usually straighten out after a min. Did help with my wifi issue though, in college and there's way to many wifi ap in the area. So the router decided to go 52 and 54 on the 5Ghz. Speeds increased a crap ton not just on wifi but also ethernet to. I'm gonna check into installing the latest of ddwrt. I might check tomato out but man its been forever since I've used it. You wouldn't happen to have a link to it? when I searched I found the old betas from back in 2010 lol.

If you continue with DD-WRT, you'll want to specify network modes and channels and not use the generic "Mixed" or "Auto". There are so many things to add on what to tweak here and there, etc., for performance out of these old MIPS units as well as what works and what is broken.
Google "FreshTomato-MIPS". It should pop up with a Linksysinfo.org link and the downloads link is on the first page of the thread in that forum. I am running/testing the latest beta (2018.5.083) on one of my E4200s. I'm also running/testing the latest public build of DD-WRT K3.x on another one.

gotcha, I know the channel its using (13 correct?) is a gray area. I'm hoping to find middle ground on this though as speeds before where jumping up and down .5-5mbps now reaching 30-80mbps there's about 30 other routers showing up when I run wifi scanner 3.4 on my laptop. Ill Def check into this after my finals today

Question so I can't just jump to tomato I need to go back to stock and then jump to the latest tomato correct? each time of course doing 30/30/30. I can't just jump from ddwrt to tomato?

I have never tried going from one 3rd party firmware to another, my FT device was flashed back to stock, then to FT from DD-WRT to be on the safe side.
DD-WRT K3 is good with these newer BCM47xx:
BCM47186B0: WNR3500Lv2, E3200, EA2700, RT-N15U
BCM4706: RT-AC66Uv1, RT-N66U, WNDR4500v1,v2, R6300v1, EA6500v1
Enjoyable with DD-WRT and bonus prize of modern QOS plus snappy web browsing and low-lag gaming.
Multicast connectivity, such as IOT, IPTV, Chromecast, and wifi printer scanner, may be feasible with version 33525 and similar.
FreshTomato may be better for these:
BCM4718A1: E3000, WRT610Nv2, WNDR3400v1, WNDR3300v2, RT-N16, WNR3500Lv1, WNR3500u, WNR3500v2, DIR-627
BCM4717A1: E2000, WRT320N
BCM4716B0: E1000v1, RT-N12vA1, WNR2000v2, ValetM10, ValetM20, DIR-605, WRT310v2, WRT160Nv3
FreshTomato is capable of full band multicast for high performance with IOT, IPTV, Chromecast, wifi printer scanner, etc...
EDIT! DD-WRT 33525 K2.6 rocked the multicast performance aboard the E2000.
P.S.
All of the older Linksys, Cisco BCM47xx have a 'desk blocks the vent' enclosure thermal flaw, so, for stability, you need to prop them up or wall mount them. _________________ R6250 with fan on; wifi off

I think if you stay with the K2.6 builds it is OK, only when going to K3.X build you have to take steps in between
Be sure to reset before and after flashing and put settings in manually
The link egc provided is a good link to read for any E3000 owner.
I have a number of E3000s routers in storage. I do have a WDS setup using 3x E3000s for a family member with Build "dd-wrt.v24-35531_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e3000.bin" during my tests I was geting +100Mbps. I did have to setup wireless security to WPA/AES to have a stable WDS connection. Since installation, over 3 months now I haven't heard of any issues with the setup and it's used for Multicast TV Boxes. USB Storage is Disabled, I don't remember if it had the same issue with the build below.
I have a E3000 (oc 533Mhz) setup as an OpenVPN Client (Wifi Disabled) to connect to a EU Server (time zone is 9 hours difference) I get about 8-10Mbps which is fine for my use. This unit is on Build "dd-wrt.v24-37932_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e3000.bin". On this Build USB storage was useless since NO file system was recognized, tried ext2/3/4, fat16/32 and ntfs all failed. _________________ Home Network on Telus 1Gb PureFibre - 10GbE Copper Backbone

Thanks for the news about the working K3 versions, 35244, 35531.
Probably, these too: WRT610N, RT-N16, WNR3500Lv1, WRT320N (but not E2000?).

I checked that build aboard an E4200. Got multicast routing A+, Multicast WiFi B-.
So, the multicast works great from the switch ports, but the wifi has some sort of commonplace 'efficiency' filter that drops some broadcasts (a good idea that can go wrong). It works, but inconveniences include screaming at your internet radio because your chromecast didn't turn down the volume while trying to boss your google home, wifi printer copier scanner that prints but won't scan and a small amount of bonjour device features missing.
That behavior is expected of a home router's wifi; so, I've got to say that it was really pleasant to see the E4200 running perfectly. Bonus: SFE+HFSC+FQ-Codel simultaneously interoperable. Yield: Especially brisk web browsing. There's no Atheros Mips that can POP! a web page onto your screen like that.

For BCM4718A1, 500MHz is the limit if you intend to use the USB port. Not saying that was the whole problem.
P.S. You're not the only one to purchase a few extra E3000. They're especially good at utilizing the lower 5GHz channels. _________________ R6250 with fan on; wifi off
