My plan is to add additional router as an access point to ensure coverage of my house. Does the second router have to also be running DDWRT in order for the VAP, and VPN setup work through the second router? Any thoughts?

You mention VAP. Do you have multiple SSIDs?

A router that supports VLAN is needed if you plan to extend multiple IP sub-nets.

My thoughts are to set the access point up in another room in the house, not through ethernet cable. So does the second rounter need DDWRT? And yes I am running 4 different SSIDs, 2.4 Non-VPN/VPN and 5.0 Non-VPN/VPN. I was thinking of using my original DDWRT router as the DHCP and allow it to handle the VPN setup I am currently running.
