I need a WiFi access point that boots up fairly fast. Ideally, I would like the time from power-on to WiFi access point ready for connections to be 30 seconds or less. If any of you know of a router that can boot up in 30 seconds or less, let me know the router model & version, best dd-wrt firmware, etc.

I will be running a simple configuration in access point mode. I don't have any problem with my network or my current device. I'm working on a project where I need to repeatedly boot the device.

I heard from someone who has a TP-Link AC1750 running DD-WRT v3.0-r35927 std (05/13/18) and his router boots up and is ready in 38 seconds. I have seen other posts where people had routers running dd-wrt that would boot up in roughly 30 seconds. Does anyone have a device which boots up even faster?

I purchased that same model mentioned above (tp-link AC1750) and flashed the same firmware, but mine takes 55 seconds from power-on to fully ready. I tweaked all the settings I could think of to tweak for a faster boot. For example, I'm not using DHCP, so there is no wait for the device to get an address.

Any ideas for making this one boot faster? Or any ideas for a device which is known to boot up even faster than 38 seconds?

Thank you. The R7800 is a good device. I'll start looking for one at a good price.

I already have my TP-Link AC1750 in WAP mode. I used these steps:

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point
Access Point (AP) instructions

Normal Version (Same Subnet) <-- this is the section I used.

I have almost all services turned off. It's lean and mean. Plus I also used a static IP.

Is there anything else I can do to improve upon that?

Which firmware version are you using? Your signature says DD-WRT 37120M 3.18 Kong. Is that correct? I don't find that version at http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/. What's the download link for it, if you don't mind. (I always seem to download the wrong file.)

The very latest firmware doesn't seem to boot up as fast as the versions from a few months ago. Is that true for you?

OK, thanks. Do you think K3-AC-IPQ806X/Test-3.18 would be the one to pick for my goal of a fast boot time?

TP-Link Archer C7 v4 with standard firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r35927 std (05/13/18) in WAP mode with minimal services running.

From power-on to fully operational in about 55 seconds. (Stock firmware was around 2 minutes)

Netgear R7000 with Kong firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r36070M kongac (05/31/18) in WAP mode with minimal services running.

From power-on to fully operational in more than 90 seconds. (Stock firmware was 120 seconds)

I have an R7800 on order. But in the mean time, is there anything I can do to get the TP-Link Archer C7 v4 to boot up faster? Someone told me theirs would boot up and be fully operational in 38 seconds, but mine takes 55 seconds.

Have you disabled the Boot Wait option?

It's there so you can Hot key into the CFE before the FW boots.

I did not have that disabled, but I will do so now. Thanks for that tip! Any other suggestions?

This is an awesome forum. dd-wrt has a great community behind it.

I have saved and applied this setting twice:

- Administration -> Management tab
-- Boot Wait: disable

However, the boot time is still 90 seconds (no faster than before) and the Web GUI shows boot wait enabled after rebooting. Is there another way to disable boot wait?

Firmware is now: DD-WRT v3.0-r37015M kongac (09/23/18)

Yes, it is in WAP mode and most services are disabled. I don't see anything else that I can disable except the Web GUI.

Thanks for that info. Wireless clients are able to connect in 38 sec?

My TP-Link Archer C7 v4 is now booting in 44 seconds (wireless clients able to connect). That's a lot better than stock. My R7000 still takes 90 seconds (stock firware was 2 minutes).

I have an R7800 on order and I'll use the kernel 4.9 kong firmware once I receive the device. If you think it would help me, could you share your nvrambak (without any sensitive info, of course)? Otherwise, I'll just put it in WAP mode and disable as many services as I can.

If anyone finds a combination of device + firmware that will boot up even faster (in WAP mode), please let me know. And if anyone can modify a device to boot up and accept wireless connections in about 10 to 15 seconds, I will donate to you or the project for information on how to do that.
