I'm using DD-WRT v3.0-r36645 std (08/19/1 but to be honest I've had this issue with every version of the firmware. Whenever I try to copy a large file from the house pc to the house nas, say 8gb, after a few gb's the wifi crashes.
The cables are all good. The signal is very strong. The router, and both machines are a metre or so away from each other.

Any ideas?

I've used the last 4 or 5 builds, currently 37012, and regularly copy large files over wifi from an attached usb drive and have no such issues. 2.4ghz is client/repeater and 5ghz is AP. Try restoring factory defaults.
Among the recent releases, I have had best results with version 08-09-2018-r36527
Encountered reboots with releases from 08-14-2018-r36596 to the current 09-21-2018-r37012.
I have a similar issue when I cast a 50GB UHD movie on my Samsung TV. The Wifi of the router restarts randomly.
It does when the bandwidth is high with any DDWRT release.
