im 96% convinced this is a client side device issue
I'm inclined to agree with you. The iPad's connect to the 5G interface and work just fine. I'm going to get a newer NIC for the PC and see if that will work.

Bought a new Linksys WUSB6300 and installed it into the PC. The 2.4G interface is working as before. The scanner on the PC shows something at 149 where ath1 is set but the scanner's not getting any info, like the SSID. The 'connect to' list for the adapter in the PC doesn't show the 5G interface.
The laptop still has the AE6000 and sees the 5G interface on the scanner but the 'connect to' list for the adapter in the laptop doesn't show the 5G interface.
Both iPads see and connect to the 5G interface.
The PC is near the router, the laptop is 20'+ away in the livingroom.
The new adapter has 14 properties(see below) and no descriptions or recommended values are given for them.
I chatted with a linksys rep who didn't have any info on the properties, I escalated to the next level.
I found a site survey button on the status-wireless-ath1 page. that's below.

yesterday I changed the 5G channel to 64 to try something. This morning the wireless channel list stops at 140 and the width only has ll-6 and lu-2. I changed it to 140 ll-6 but the list hasn't changed. this is on r36175(kong)
(updated) same trucated channel list on r36247(BS)
the 5G inf is not on the scanner or the connection list in windows.

did u change the reg domain? 140 is only valid on LU @ 80mhz
No, the only thing I've been playing with are the channel and width settings. Is there a way to tell from the S/N or something on the label what country the router was made for?
The wireless channel list now only ranges from 36 to 140, nothing above 140.
Forgot to mention, I rebooted this morning after seeing the reduce channel list, reboot didn't fix it.
This is getting stranger and stranger.

dont think so, but cause this is an ath10k router, the ath10k firmware that runs the radios is "open", and plays well with what the user tells it what country mode its running in.
if its seemingly changing all by itself theres probably some ddwrt issues getting in the way.. try reflashing the build and restore defautlts _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

I reflashed the ddwrt fw came out with the same list. I changed the reg to canada applied then back to US. now the list is 36 to 161. better.
I checked the md5 file and it matched the download.
I noticed the ISP router says to use the same SSID and passwords for 2.4G and 5G interfaces.
Is that true for the ddwrt fw?
I never use the same SSID. Guess you could if you wanted but I prefer to know what band I'm connecting to with certain devices ...hence I use different SSIDs.
