I was running Brainslayer's r34080 since it came out in 12/1, recently I upgraded to Kong's r36174 on my EA8500.
The following discussion applies to both versions of DD-WRT on my EA8500.

I noticed that the 5GHz channel doesn't show up on my Iphone 5s or my AE6000 adapter in my PC or the AE6000 adapter in my laptop. My iPad Air 2 does see and can connect to the EA8500 5GHz channel.

I can see/connect to my ISP's 5Ghz channel from any of my devices, iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, AE6000 on my laptop or PC.
Any ideas as to why I can't see the 5GHz channel?

Settings on the 8500 are:

extension channel UL (+6)

set it to UU only, only UU is valid for 149 on 80mhz

Changed the extension channel to UU+6. Still having the problem.
Is there a doc with an explanation of the settings?

EA8500 5GHz settings I use and have for couple years with many dd-wrt builds.
Currently on BS-r36247. It also has a guest VAP on 5GHz. Have never had a problem.

Using the settings suggested by mrjcd, 161 ll-6, the 5GHz radio seemed to turn off. None of my devices could see the 5GHz interface.
I changed the ll-6 to uu+6 resulting in no improvement.

Changing to channel 36 uu+6:
On r36246std all devices could see and connect to the 5GHz interface. Using Wi-Fi Sweetspots I saw a bandwidth of 500 to 650 Mbps.

On r36175M, all devices could see and connect to the 5GHz interface. Using Wi-Fi Sweetspots I saw a bandwidth of 600 to 900 Mbps.

The bandwidth difference doesn't matter much as the ISP router's connection to the Internet is a bottleneck at 50Mbps.
So two questions come to mind:
Is the DD-WRT software broken on the upper channels of the 5GHz radio?
What difference between the IPS router and the 8500(DD-WRT) would cause the iphones to not connect to the 8500's 5GHz interface?

no they work fine, ur device probably doesnt support those channels (bought from a different region?) or u had something else invalid set, make sure security is set to wpa2 personal aes or wpa2 personal mixed aes

reg domain is important too, must set one that supports selected channel, and both radios must use the same reg domain at the same time, or it breaks in all sorts of ways

I reset the settings to default and rebooted the router. I followed the recommendations from the Settings Guide. The 5GHz set to, 161 with a default ll-6, that didn't run the 5GHz interface. I changed that to 161 uu+6, that's not running either.
This router was purchased in San Jose California, it's the model with the serial connector pins in the motherboard. I remember the 5GHz interface running at 149 but I don't remember what the extension setting was, but it's not working now.
Any ideas what settings maybe causing the upper channels to not work?

set it to 161+LL again, then issue the "dmesg" command, copy/paste the entire output into a .txt file and upload it to the forum or whatever cloud service of choice

Interesting, I reset the setting to 161 LL-6, applied the settings and my scanner is showing the router still broadcasting on channel 36.

I attached a screenshot of the ath1 status page. At the bottom the 2 devices connected to ath0 don't see ath1 and can't connect. The device connected to ath1 I connected to ath0 then back to ath1 then took the screenshot.
