Hi there. I own a TP-LINK TL-WA701ND flashed with de-wrt. The device works perfectly for just about everything, but I can't get any vpns to work.

My goal is the connect this router to my main router (via a cable), and use it as an access point to create a wireless VPNified network I can connect to with any device at home.

I am using IPvanish as my VPN. They support all protocols, l2tp, pptp, openvpn, etc. I followed all the correct steps but it never works. Under basic settings, Wan is set to disabled. As soon as I change it to anything else, I can no longer connect to the router anyone (not via ip, etc). I have to hard reset the router (30/30/30) to connect again. And yes, I gave the router a different subset static ip before this point.

The VPN tab only has pptp available (oenvpn isn't listed here, maybe my device is too weak to run it). I tried it there, but it never connected never worked. I tried it in the main router basic settings (as pptp) and it didn't work. Never connected. What am I doing wrong here? The login info is all correct, and copied straight from my windows vpn settings, which work perfectly on my PC. All I want is a router that can access internet via it's eithernet cable, and create a wireless VPN network.

In addition to @Eibgrad, I think you have an Atheros based router with 4 MB flash so no OpenVPN is possible for you and you are stuck with PPTP (reason being 4 MB flash is not enough to fit everything in and therefore OpenVPN is left out).

If you want to use a bridged configuration follow: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point

An unbridged guest wifi will route via the VPN but other clients need their default gateway set (manually or using DNSMASQ on the primary router) as @Eibgrad pointed out that is not for the uninitiated and just using the router as default gateway (connecting LAN from primary to WAN from secondary router and reset secondary router to defaults) is far easier.
