I don't know historically how often Kong releases updates, but before switching to this firmware, I'd like to know if he's regular still active etc. - the last update I see is Feb, assuming I'm looking at the right place here:
I'm trying to decide whether for the R7000 I should stick with the Main Brainslayer fork (I can see Brainslayer is very active in updates, at least looking at the changelog that isn't r7000-specific) or whether to go Kong, which is almost 4 months since last update for my router - thoughts appreciated!
What I'm primarily after is the ability to implement dns host blocklists, which stock doesn't let me do.
secondly to block internal devices trying to go external for their dns without me knowing, since the samsung tvs are extremely sneaky at trying to reach out elsewhere for their dns if they think they are being blocked from squealing back to Samsung
The February build is fine, that's what you should run. The test builds are for his testing and others if they want to be risky. There isn't enough development on the R7000 to warrant a new build every week (just look at the changelog it's nearly all minor stuff from BrainSlayer).
Every few months Kong posts a new build, assuming when he feels something is worth posting, just run those.

I just moved from DDWRT to XWRT Vortex. I was continuing to have problems with DDWRT, dropped packets, unstable connections, wifi connections dropping completely. I tried to stay current, follow best practices, but my connection was not reliable enough.
On a whim, I noticed someone had posted about XWRT Vortex, and I gave it a go. The UI is so nice, and fast. Vortex is actively worked on, with actual change logs that show what has changed. My connection is bulletproof. I was able to overclock easily. VPN support for PIA worked great (I'm getting about 45 Mb/sec with my overclock and tweaked settings). If more people knew about it, they would move over. Try it out.

Ran XWRT Vortex when it first came out on a r7000. Was nice. As you probably know it is really Asus firmware with tweaks to make it work on the r7000 and have taken the Trend Micro stuff out as that is licensed to Asus for their use only. I find I like just about any router interface over DD-WRT's antiquated tabbed interface and Asus has a nice one which is what you get with this firmware.
Running the real deal now on a Asus RT-AC86U that just runs. If you are thinking of an upgrade would recommend it. No drops of any kind, just runs.
