It appears that you can simply change the header of the DDWRT chk file as described here (the following is a snippet or the R6400v2 install guide:

Recent reports indicate that Netgear is checking the actual build number and does not let you downgrade.
As DDWRT has no build numbers set into the files, it is possible that you can not upgrade to DDWRT.
If you run into this situation you can contact me for a possible solution or modify the header of the .chk file to include a higher build number.

i made changes to the header in dd-wrt .chk file and it would not upload. Error message: This firmware file is incorrect. Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware.
I used the GUI.
I do not have a usb ttl cable and I am a total novice, a beginner with an R8000 and wanting dd-wrt to run on it
The firmware in my router is V1.0.4.28_10.1.54
FCC ID: PY314200264
Made in Vietnam

If you're suggesting that you can use a hex editor to change the embedded version number I do not believe that will work. While it's true the version number is in the first several bytes I also believe there is one or more embedded checksums. At least that's what I gather from a quick read of the patch source code. Flipping bytes will make it fail any checksum check. You must build the OpenWRT CHK file using the patch in the the first link.
I think what needs to be done is for, either or both, Kong and or BS to create a factory to dd-wrt to overcome this security update by Netgear.The downside will be novices, like me, will be lost and the benefits of not being able to enjoy third party open source will reduce demand for Netgear routers.
I wait for a software update. I have ordered a usb ttl cable online and have to wait about 2 months for delivery. Maybe there will be some new development while I wait.

I must give thanks to Samus250 in get my brand new R8000 up and running. He was great and even though a novice like me did very little, I greatly appreciate what he has done and I will continue to learn from this forum.

Hey Abboo,
could your please share the file you've compiled that you've originally flashed?
Upload the attached file. When performing the below steps note the ip address of the router and the modem may be the same and if so, it will create conflict. I went into the modem and changed its ip address. When you are attaching the router to the modem ensure to connect the cable to the Wan port of the router. As usual when you flash the router make sure only the computer is connected to the router via the Lan port. In performing the below tasks you will need to connect to the internet
Don't hard reset the R8000, since it apparently never helps.
I flashed the file in ./bin/targets/bcm53xx/generic/openwrt-bcm53xx-netgear-r8000-squashfs.chk using the regular Netgear Genie web interface. The router rebooted, so I ssh'hd into it:
Code:
$ ssh root@192.168.1.1
And connected it to my existing router (coincidentally, it's an R8000P), got an IP from it, and then tried:
Code:
$ ping 8.8.8.8
At this point, just like rwrjr noted, it would send 7 or 8 packets successfully, all with a few ms of RTT, but the 8th would take much, much longer. Then 7 packets would be sent in rapid succession and the 8th would take much longer and so on. I'm not sure if it was some kind of ip conflict or something, since both routers were using the same subnet with the same IP. I have no networking experience whatsoever so I'm just speculating, but I disregarded it and just connected it directly to my cable modem as rwrjr said. Although this isn't a fiber connection through an ONT, I had the same issue and rwrjr's solution worked flawlessly.

I have read thru this thread many times. If I am reading it right, I should be able to use your file (already patched) and pickup from step 12 without a TTL usb cable? I am making this assumption since you said you did not have one.
Your assumption is correct. I do not take ownership of the file, it was supplied by Samus250, thanks to him again for saving all those who used his file and follow the instructions as supplied in this forum.

Thank you for letting me know, Been trying to figure this out for days!
The only other thing I can add is if need to reset the router to defaults, the 30/30/30 reset did not work for me. Hold the reset with power applied for about 5 seconds until the top power light turns amber and let go.

I followed the oulined instructions here meticulously but ended up with an undesired outcome. See attachment.
I now can neither SSH into the Router (R8000) nor access any functions within the admin panel.
Any help is appreciated. Again, I followed steps and even compiled my own files. Everything worked perfectly up to the very last step of expecting normal DD-WRT page. I have no idea how to make any changes or to retry uploading.
