Hello,
I am quit new on DD-WRT but I managed to download an ova (VMWare ready to use VM template) from Casler found on VMWare appliance forum (https://marketplace.vmware.com/vsx/solutions/dd-wrt-router-appliance). It is working quit well but it is using a release of 2007.

I tried to download a new image from dd-WRT ftp download site and using physdiscwrite tool (https://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php), I managed to create a new linux VM using last implementation of DD-WRT.

The issue is when I look at the VM, each time I try to save setup I have nvram I/O faillure. I cannot save the setup I am doing using the web administration interface of the router (192.168.1.1).

Any idea?

This may not be the answer you are looking for but I went through some similar pain in my Hyper-V environment. I converted the same VMware image and could never upgrade the DD-WRT firmware to the latest.

Assuming this might be something to do with the ova I decided to build my own from scratch in Hyper-V but what I have found so far is that I can not get DD-WRTx86/64 to work passed build r25697 "Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/22/14) std".

My current recommendation in a VM environment would be to use Firmware Version DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/22/14) std - build 25697 - 64bit.

Assuming you are using the public version, below is the required download links:

Full image: https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2014/12-22-2014-r25697/x86_64/dd-wrt_public_vga.image

Web GUI Upgrade: https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2014/12-22-2014-r25697/x86_64/dd-wrt-webupgrade_public_vga.bin

Hope this is of some help?

@Smoove,
Thank you so much for your reply.

I will keep you updated.

@Smoove,
Thanks for the trick, it solved my nvram issue...
I am still struggeling to make the VPN Server/Daemon feature of DD-WRT works, but that's another story...

I just setup one with the latest build for ESXi. Under Windows 10 I created a 256MB VHD in Disk Management.
I wrote the latest x86-64 image to that VHD and saved it. I then used "qemu-img" to convert to a VMDK for use in ESXi.

https://cloudbase.it/qemu-img-windows/

qemu-img.exe convert dd-wrt.vhd -O vmdk dd-wrt.vmdk

Import that Disk into ESXi and it should work.

It needs to be setup as having an IDE controller in ESXi.
Once you get it running on the LAN side (will be slow), then enable WAN under Setup tab. Hope that helps.

Hey,

Thanks for pointing out that the build I had on my website was old.

I've updated the ova to a version of ddwrt from March 2019.

Please try it out.
