@ LookingForMyMojo interesting but since that is dated May 17, 2016 I think the key word (no pun intended) is ""Finally, there is also an option to make SSH access available over WAN". I don’t recall seeing it when I toyed with the Merlin FW a few years ago.. I looked in my Asus folder and I used RT-AC68U_3.0.0.4_376.47_0.trx which appears to be from 2014. I'll dig out my old Asus at some point and load up the old Merlin version again and look again and then I'll take a look at the current build. thanks for the info

ssh screenshot - apologies about the size --> windows 10, don't like it much, tried to resize the image but whatever.

well, there are 4 on ebay at around $170 with this one vendor. significantly lower than the going price of $200. my only worry is that the vendor may be scamming as they're relatively new to ebay, is russian, and accepts no returns. a trifecta for not doing it!! ebay typically stands behind these purchases so i may roll the dice - caveat emptor!

good info - just hope the box and this vendor are reliable.

@LookingForMyMojo Here is a free Image Resizer program for Windows. I use it almost daily and it works very well.
Resize Image option goes into the 'right click' menu.

Thanks for sharing about the image resizer app for windows. Been wanting something like that at times. Not as often as you do though.

Doesn't windows 10 have the good old 'paint' program?
Before you ask, yes I have been living under a rock.

For anything that doesn't require great resolution 'paint' 'resize' works fine for posting pics of the UI page.

@ LookingForMyMojo thanks for the image but I didn’t doubt you and good to know. My point was I never seen it in build 376.47 which obviously didn’t have it included because according to the link you posted it was not deployed until 2016. I managed to get 376.47 (from 2014) and then on to 378.51 and then tried to go current but I crashed the router it and had to use the recovery mode. After a quick search apparently there’s an intermediate version with CFE upgrade so off to look for that... Not sure what that will do if I want to go back to dd-wrt assuming I get that far LOL. At the risk of beating a dead horse it's a decent feature to be used with Putty for remote access. IMHO it provides better security than the typical 6 to 8 character password

EDIT: have it now in Merlin FW 378.55_0,looks like they made several changes including the router logon page from 378.51 ----> 378.55

EDIT 2
I have to admit I was wrong. I crashed the router again by jumping ahead too many builds and had to recover with the stock FW. While back in merlin 376.47 I looked to confirm and the SSH Authorized Key field is there even though it’s a 2014 build. Going to see if I could get it back to 378.55 and then .56 and call it a day and put it out to test later.

There are 3 'built in' photo editing programs in Windows 10. The default, Photos has basic tools like crop & rotate, draw, red eye remover as well as some filtering.
Then there's Paint and Paint 3D.

If I'm just looking at pictures I'll use the default 'Photos' and for editing I use 'Paint 3D'.

Hummm well then there is no need to use any third party resizer?
I know that a image can get screwed up, (using simple paint resize) but afaik resizing a screen shot of a UI is no problem and takes literally about ten seconds.
I just looked at your post again I also use that sometimes when I want to be able to resize without loss of quality.

Windows has tools to crop, but not to resize an image whilst keeping the entire image intact.

For best quality:
Keep the difference between the original and newly resized as small as possible. (If you try to shrink or expand too much - much of the image quality will be lost)
Always crop the parts you don't need to show first.

so i just purchased that rt-ac86u on ebay and i've found merlin code on sourceforge.
    1. is the fw load process similar to what we do on dd-wrt/3200?
    2. assuming that unlike linksys, there is only one partition, how ez is it to revert back to stock?
    3. is this https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/ the main site for info and details?
yep, i'm all in, guys.

I bought a WRT3200ACM to replace a D-Link 868L. To begin with, I used Linksys firmware. The improvement was phenomenal.

Then I installed DD-WRT and ran in to some problems, because I was new to it. We have Iphones, Andriods, Macs and PCs. We don’t do much gaming. We average 30 – 40 Gbits down per day, peaking 150 Gbits per day. Regardless of the number of clients (up to 20) and the traffic, through or behind the router, we never notice any slowdowns on our clients. Whether cabled or wireless, there is 230-250Mbits/s down and 100 Mbits/s up, if the client can handle it. VoIP don’t garble as it used to do. If the source is HD, what you see on the display or TV, is also HD.

Basically, there are never problems, except those that have been self-inflicted, because I am new to DD-WRT. In answer to 128bit, the most unstable part of the equation, is myself. Before I started experimenting, I had r30796 running for a month, ending with a power failure.

I would have like better support for VLAN. DD-WRT does require that you read, so you know what you are doing. Other than that, DD-WRT on Linksys WRT3200ACM has worked very well for us.

you seem new, so welcome. i've been watching this board for well over 5 years now. finally joined after buying the 1900ac. went through countless kong builds with that until he bailed. all in all, it was a very good router for my needs which are significantly less than yours!
bought the 3200acm about a year or 2 ago, because it was a steal. it was noticeably faster than the 1900ac but again for my needs, and with few exceptions streaming was always fine with both. keep in mind that originally, i had an e4200.
the major frustration is with linksys and their inability to deliver as promised. sometimes a build will be problematic for me on the 5 ghz radio but nothing catastrophic. unlike many others, this is more of a hobby for me.
my biggest issue with dd-wrt is my one weather device that refuses to connect; connects fine with stock firmware. my biggest issue with stock firmware is not having enough security over the guest account; dd-wrt is great there. i use the guest account to restrict my iot devices - tv, vacuum, etc.
these guys are highly technical here, so i also get a lesson. i'm a retired os/middleware/security sw guy - these folks here keep me young.

Don’t know about you new inbound unit but the ones prior to yours uses the “Recovery mode” AKA "CFE miniWeb Server" if case you have a bad flash or you brick it. Sounds dramatic but it’s pretty straightforward and bulletproof. It would be very foolish if Asus removed it but you may want to verify..
