So, I setup a pfSense VM to basically releive my WRT's of all duties, essentially making them simply APs. Everything SHOULD be all fine and dandy, however not having MU-MIMO thanks to shoddy drivers is really irking me.
I have WDS setup, which I'm glad is finally working, but I'm pretty close to just saying eff it, and switch to Ubiquiti APs, especially considering they're much more cost effective.
Anyone else in the same boat? I'm just starting to loose faith. First it was the 1900's, now the 3200's...
I'm just not sure if I want to keep dealing with this.

I feel your frustration. After 3years of struggling, I have walked away from Linksys and have never been happier with my internet / network. _________________ My "WRT" rant, and why I have gone ddwrt on x86, no more consumer routers. ( ac86u as access points & bridges )

as a -f-up to looking's post, i too was sick and tired. went the same route (pun intended) as looking... with asus. was extremely leery at first since their are lots of comments on how it will fail after a while and drops connections.
now i've only had mine about 5 days but no drops at all while streaming vids. moreover, i'm dis-inclined to use dd-wrt now as the stock sw/fw meets all my needs! 5g for the tvs, 2.4g for everything else not wired including a guest slot for my iot devices. very impressive. _________________ asus rt-ac86u stock: 3.0.0.4.384_45149

Anyone who has followed my posts knows that I worked with WRT's for 3 years, last two with a wrt3200.
I too finally figured out that things were probably never going to be right and full featured with the wireless of the wrt3200. Too bad as the specs read as a bad a.. router.
In my case I had a bad taste in my mouth with experiences with Asus routers, flaky firmware primarily that Merlin was able to make work. Had good experience with Netgear so am now running a Netgear r8000 off of Ebay. What a difference, both OEM and Kong firmware just run and wireless speeds are faster then I ever saw with the wrt3200.
Well, if your just using them as AP's, nothing special. Why not just flash the latest, fixed Stock firmware which has mu-mimo and then set them back into AP mode?

Is there that big a difference in the wifi speeds?? I have been using the WRT3200 and have found it somewhat stable these last few builds. I have been looking at the Netgear R9000 quite a bit lately thinking it may be the way to go and just giving my WRT3200 away...

good to see this post from you as i was curious as to how things worked out once you switched. i too have had a positive experience with the ac-86u. to be candid, i was shocked with the positive change!
part of the shock was a doubling of speed by spectrum. i clearly missed that memo. in my area, if you bought the 100 Mbps service, you're now seeing 200 Mbps. we'll see how long that lasts before another increase.
still, both radio speeds are 90 or above even being downstairs and about 35' away from the box. i may even downgrade if i can since 15 Mbps with my old 1900ac was enough for my 4k streaming needs.
the only downside from the 3200acm is that the tvs take longer to connect. it was instantaneous with linksys. trust me, i can live with that inconvenience. _________________ asus rt-ac86u stock: 3.0.0.4.384_45149

Yes my experience with the Netgear r8000 is very similar to yours with Asus. Faster speeds, solid wireless network and good solid firmware, both OEM, at least the 2 days I ran the OEM, and Kong for 4 plus days and counting. Feels great after close to 2 years of shaky wireless performance and other issues.
