I have tried to upload the .chk firmware from kong. The latest one and it says that the firmware is not compatable from my router. Just yesterday I flashed my other r8000 router with kongs build with no problem.
I have done a 30/30/30 reset. Tested on the original firmware when I received my device and the latest firmware from netgear. Any suggestions?

This is simple the id of the R8500 does not match the one in the build, which means either some new variant or corrupt flash. _________________ KONG PB's: http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/

What is the name of the file you tried to flash on the R8500? _________________ Segment 1 R9000 10Gb LAN, 1Gb ISP BS

I just purchased one of these, and I think I'm having the same issue as at least one other person on the board. I tried to upload the most recent, and an older, .chk file to start the move of the R8500 to DD-WRT, but I got the error message from the Netgear firmware that the firmware is not compatible with the router. Error Code -2. The router otherwise appears to work, and it was able to upgrade to the most recent Netgear firmware. But, interestingly, it would not downgrade to an earlier firmware for the R8500. Any suggestions on how to get DD-WRT on this? I'm assuming this means that this is a new variant build of the R8500. I can provide information if you can tell me what to look for and how to get it to you. Thanks!
I am running into the same issue (although I am able to downgrade to at least one older version of the Netgear firmware without a problem.) I have tried the r8500 chk files going back several months and they all give the error. I also tried the ones on the myopenrouter.com site as well with the same results.
I wonder if we are dealing with a new revision to the model. I can't really find a number on mine that tells which revision it is unless it is this one on the sticker on the bottom under made in Vietnam:

Get a usb ttl adapter attach it and show me the output when flashing.
I didn't immediately understand this but after some google searching I think I understand what you are asking for. I found this link which seems to be a nice walk through of connecting (albeit for a different Netgear router) and using the usb-ttl adapter.
I assume the pins may be different on the R8500 so I'll need to figure those out. I had to order a usb-ttl cable so it may be a few days before I can provide the update.
