Hi, new here. I'd like to share my experience with D-Link DIR-878 A1 1900 and, may be, find a solution for my issue or at least new ideas to try.

My DIR-878 A1 came with the stock FW v1.20. The only way I found to flash it was via recovery mode (Firmware Upgrade Failed! via GUI). Flashing process was fine and smooth this way. No problem at all.

When it came to wireless operability in AP mode, no problem either with open networks. My problem comes when setting WPA/WPA2 Personal encryption (TKIP, AES). I get to see the network (only 2.4GHz) with the lock symbol from the client (tested with three different clients: 2 android (5.0.1 and 6.0.1) and a MacBook Pro). But I have never got to connect to the network (Android just don't connect and MacBook says Connection failed!). Moreover, the MacBook client asked once for username and password like if the encryption were WPA Enterprise.

I've played with modes (Mixed, B, G, BG, N...), channels, BW (full, half, quarter...), SSID broadcasting, regulatory domain, power transmission and antenna gain, timeouts, low signal threshold, firewall, and interfaces (ath0-2.4GHz, ath1-5GHz)... without success.

I flashed the stock FW back twice (1.04 and 1.20) and WPA* networks worked flawlessly, so it doesn't seem to be a HW issue.

These are the releases I've tried so far:

r39296
r42174
r42278
r42287
r42335
r42366

Thanks for your attention.

Just try WPA2 with AES. Forget about TKIP and WPA because they are obsolete (TKIP are just for b and g compatibility).
I just installed r4260 for dlink-dir-882-a1 on my dlink-dir-878-a1 and it works fine for me.

Hi, I am trying to flash ddwrt, started with recovery mode and uploaded factory-to-ddwrt.bin with success in ie8 winxp, but the router wont reboot automatically. After manual reboot it goes to stock firmware. What am I doing wrong? Where goes the second webflash image?

Thanks for any hint.

I guess flashing from stock D-link firmware doesn't work.

You can see if downgrading the stock D-Link firmware before using crash recovery method to upload a dd-wrt firmware works for you.
I did not encounter any issues going from D-Link stock 1.12 firmware to dd-wrt 02-27-2020-r42542 via crash recovery method on a North American DIR-878.

Those files are for routers already running dd-wrt firmware.

Tried downgrading with the dlink GUI, tried unencript fw link from this forum, next fw 1.01 from dlink download and all failed. Maybe try that unencrypt version from recovery mode? I got the impression that the recovery mode upload page just waits two minutes and then writes success. Uploading through curl prints HTML and closes connection. I dont know if connection is held in ie8 or neccessary to be held open... Mine is european version. [/quote]

yes you need to flash unencrypted FW that i posted on previous page from recovery mode... OK honestly never tried it on 1.20, but it works that way on 1.12 so no real reason it wouldnt work on 1.20 as well...

In the past, downgrade via D-Link's GUI did not work for me.
In my situation, I downgraded to D-Link's own DIR-878_A1_F/W:v1.00 firmware using their crash recovery procedure.
and
The crash recovery procedure was also required to switch from D-Link's 1.12 stock firmware to dd-wrt firmware.

Good luck.

Managed to downgrade to 1.04 unencrypt. But then factory-to-ddwrt.bin with no luck. Tried dlinks own 1.01, still no luck. Is there any trick, timing? Or just try it several times?

Have any of you guys had issues returning to stock D-Link after flashing factory-to-ddwrt.bin?

I can't get into D-Link Recovery mode using the crash method.

There's activity on my laptops NIC and packets are transferring but no recovery mode using IE and a static IP in the routers range.

Has anyone managed to go from FW 1.20 to DD-WRT?
It won't take the unencrypted fw (DIR878A1_FW104B05_Middle_FW_Unencrypt) at the recovery mode.

Edit:
I managed to downgrade to 1.12 at the D-Link web interface. Then downgrade to 1.10.

Now I'm stuck at this point. Cannot downgrade any further. Even at the recovery mode.

Any ideas?

Edit2:
Got it done. Had to use Internet Explorer. Firefox and Google Chrome didn't work at DLink Recovery Mode flashing page. Got 1.04 unencryped flashed and then the latest DD-WRT 42847.

I have version 1.11 A1 (maybe Canada version)

  1. Download known version
    1. https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2017/12-29-2017-r34311/dlink-dir878-a1/factory-to-ddwrt.bin and

  2. Follow Emergency Flashing of DIR router http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.msg163599#msg163599

  3. Follow https://www.howtogeek.com/103190/change-your-ip-address-from-the-command-prompt/ to change the windows ip address from dhcp to static 192.168.0.5
    Code:
    netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Ethernet" static 192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1

  4. http://192.168.0.1/ and replace the firmware with the file above

  5. Follow https://www.howtogeek.com/103190/change-your-ip-address-from-the-command-prompt/ to change the windows ip address back to dhcp
    Code:
    netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Ethernet" source=dhcp

  6. http://192.168.1.1/ I HOPE dd-wrt uses this as default

  7. Don't bother changing anything other than username and password

  8. http://192.168.1.1/Upgrade.asp
    1. flash to using the second file dlink-dir878-a1-webflash.bin

Followed this guide and have been up and running for a week no with no issues. Running lastest beta 2020-04-06, found here if anyone else is looking for it https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2020%2F04-06-2020-r42847%2Fdlink-dir878-a1%2F

Almost 1 week running stable on 42872
No restarts. About 15 clients, 3 of them wired.
Looks like everything is working as it should. I'm gonna stay on this version. Smile

This thread was opened for initial device support being added to the firmware, not a one stop shop help desk. Not going to have a thread turn into 100 pages of unnecessary cumbersome nonsense. Please report issues in build release threads. Use search function, Google, or open a new thread to discuss issues and seek help. Thank you.
