I was about to install pi hole in my rasperry pi, before I stumbled upon this post. How does this compare to ad blocking by pi hole?. I am not interested in GUI and other fancy stuff provided by pi hole. Just looking from the ad blocking perspective. If this can act as a replacement for pi hole, I would like to use this instead of using separate device for ad blocking.
Note : I have a Linksys WRT1900AC2 and the adblocking is set up successfully now. So far everything seems to be fine. I do have to add some urls in mywhitelist to unblock some of the websites.

Thank you for your hardwork! Seems like a promising script to keep Ads away from daily browsing.
I have a situation, perhaps you can throw some light?
I have created the ad-block configuration and executed according to the instructions. My setup is behind a VPN. When I add the VPN address into whitelist and rerun the script, the script seem to be rewriting the added URL.
Without adding the VPN URLs to the whilelist, I am unable to connect as I have other firewall rules etc etc which means my primary virtual interface is unable to connect and everything else becomes unstable.
So question here - how can i ensure that the VPN URLs added to the whitelist remain there and does not get overwritten after re-running the script.
Thank you all in advance.
My configuration -
Router ModelAsus RT-N66U
Firmware Version DD-WRT v3.0-r37305 big (10/10/18 )
Kernel VersionLinux 3.10.108-d6 #21212 Wed Oct 10 16:41:43 CEST 2018 mips
also, i have observed that when adblocker is enabled wifi becomes very unstable.
note that i even added the tunnel port onto mywhitelist without any success.
any pointers will be helpful.
Sorry I do not use nord so from here I can only give you educated guesses
The setup for nord says to use two of their servers for DNS in your router setup
Are they in your mywhitelist also?
I may be wrong but I don't think the port number should be in your mywhitelist
When I go to your specified address in a browser I get no response with add blocker and without...nor do I get a ping response
If I go to your specified address without the port number I get a page saying that there is an error in the address...with and without the add blocker....though I am not in the UK nor am I using their DNS
If I manually resolve the address to 126.96.36.199 I get same results
Now the unstable WiFi appears to be a different router config or firmware problem all together...unless the DNS is being blocked
If you review the script you'd see that it really doesn't treat the type of connection any differently...does not specify WiFi or adapter in any way
Thanks to Yamaraj for the script. Agree this conversation shouldn't be seen as going on tangent, well in fact this will strengthen the script to cater to people behind a VPN. Having read all the pages on this thread I don't see any configuration related to VPN, so I am unable to gauge the config along with adblocker people are using with VPN.
Thanks Dr.K for your persistence and taking time to respond. Much appreciated.
Yes, I have added all possible IP's from my OpenVPN log to mywhitelist without any success.
In fact, i started digging around my router configuration and there was "Use DNSMasq for DHCP" enabled which I turned off ..nothing changed.
