So now I'm really confused. It seems that optware is the way to go, but the memory requirements seem to make this a no go. I need USB support, before I could attach a USBKEY, but need the extra storage of USBKEY to use optware.
The other questions is the wiki is currently geared toward IPKG not optware.. So stuff like usb printer support directions are referencing optware.
The other question is that I need a micro build in order to install usb/printer support, but micro doesn't have cifs or samba.. How do I get a micro build with cifs or samba?
I have not experimented with USB yet, I simply mount a share from my freebsd computer via SMB (CIFS)
You can also mount a share from your windows computer if you don't have a linux/freebsd server.
Simply setup a share on your windows computer and then mount it via the webinterface
I created a folder named moto and shared it with a username of moto.... but if your on a windows computer then share a folder and use your windows login username and password
I was trying to use opt (to get scanner working). Did not succeed yet though.
The question - if i share windows folder, will i need to keep my computer on all the time, or i need that share only to install and configure opt package?
OK, so mounting the share would allow me limitless storage, so I would have access to all the packages.
Unless I'm missing something that wouldn't help me with my end goal of getting the router to act like a print server. So my next question is does the micro build have cifs or samba build in? I'm not finding it, but need it to move forward.
You haven't specified what router you are using, so I will just assume if you have usb support you have 4MB of flash. At the very least this will be enough to add usb support for a usbkey, which you can then mount and switch to ipkg-opt. You might be able to use ipkg exclusively but I have gone the usbkey method cause I needed the extra space for other values.
Your original problem looked like an error resolving downloads.open... so I would look at that first at that. Try pinging the downloads site and wgeting manually and see what happens, it shouldn't work (given the error). How is this router connected to the internet?
Thought I updated my profile to contain what router I have.. My bad.
It is a ASUS 520GU It has 4MB Flash. Is that enough for for usb and printer support?
As for how connected to internet. The Asus is setup as a wireless bridge and I have confirmed that clients of this router can connect to the internet without issue. The main wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G v4 that is connected to the main router an old (but still working!) BEFSR41 v2. Only the Asus has dd-wrt installed, and the BEFSR41 v2 is the main DHCP server.
I'll post the results of wgeting and a ping later today.
root@DD-WRT:/jffs# ping http://downloads.openwrt.org/

To me this means that DNS is not working. What is the next thing to check or do?

I can upload a great USB firmware if you want. It is a modified firmware that Shinji257 is working on, based on RC7 9338. It has USB, Serial, p910ND print daemon, usb automount, and an optware automount all configured from the services tab of the DD-WRT webui. I have added funtional optware mounting, and p910nd print scripts to shinji's firmware. The p910nd daemon script is setup for a bi-directional printer, but I can mod a firmware without bi-directional if it does not work for you. This should fit on a 4meg router, but I have not tried it. Let me know and I will upload it if anyone wants it.

I would like to get DNS working also, but if the modified firmware works then I'm not sure if it will matter until I get a new main router that will support dd-wrt. For now I've been looking at some of the setups from this page in the wiki: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DDNS_-_How_to_setup_Custom_DDNS_settings_using_embedded_inadyn_-_HOWTO
, but I don't really see anything as simple as I use on my BEFSR41 router which is just provide the IP address given to me by my ISP provider.
These are:
24.197.160.17
24.197.160.18
What option can I use from dd-wrt to use these IPs?

Where you put in the ip address for the ddwrt router, there is also an option for local dns and gateway. Just fill both of those in with the ip of your internet connected router and it should work.
