V24_TNG (The Next Generation) was, I believe, a fork of the V24 code branch.

is there a good diagram or explanation of the basic pros+cons of the different forks?

just to throw a few more terms around, besides VINTage and TheNextGeneration, there is linux kernel 2.4 vs 3.0, and then I need to decide if I should use a build by Eko, Kong or Brainslayer!!
