Good afternoon,
It has been a long time since I don't check the forums for the latest news regarding dd-wrt development and as my router is kind of old, what is the recommended build for an Asus RT-N16 in terms of stability and features?
I've seen some posts saying 29 something is running flawlessly.

Supp fggs? Long time.
I can't help you with your question (because I too, have not stayed very active) but I did want to say howdy.
My network (and routers) are perfect so I don't mess with it much any more (testing). Once in a while but not often. _________________ [Moderator Deleted]
Yeah, let's not transform this into a private chat hahah
My router is rock solid, but as my ISP is starting to deploy IPv6 I thought about getting ahead and let things prepared for it.
My plan is to flash a build from "Broadcom K3.X testing, test users wanted" thread and move to the current latest (30880 if I'm not mistaken).
I like the way we used to do back in the day, use a stable build tested by several trustable users and then moved to the "Recommended build" thread from either Murkff or redhawk0's. Nowadays it seems most of the users from our time has vanished..
I hate to use my router as guinea pig, but it is what it is..
Pretty much along the lines of what [user="fggs"] did, but with a different final version as follows:
1. Initial flashing of dd-wrt - any k2.X version later 14929.bin or later should work fine. I used v24-sp2 (12/24/10) mega - build 15962-K2.6
2. Second flashing - required to install K3.x firmware versions:
- 21530_NEWD-2_K3.x_big.bin (Must be .bin file. Note this version 'does not work' but must be flashed to enable K3.x verions.)
3. Upgrade to a later version of dd-wrt K3.I am running dd-wrt.v24-27506_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N16.trx
This version has been very stable. I have been running it for six months on two RT-N16s without issue. Other stable versions people have reported may be 24461, 29048
Notes: after upgrading to K3.x apparently you can use the .bin or .trx files.
3.x builds use a compatible network card driver rather than the native one on the 2.6 builds, Internet Wan speed is noticeably slower on 3.x and the RT-N16 router. Do a speedtest before and after upgrading.
With 3.x builds you lose the ability to run OTRW.
Advantages of the 3.x build on the RT-N16 is access to greater than 32k of NVRAM(64K) and ability to mount hard drives greater than 2TB.
My RT-N16s report 256k of NVRAM (which is wrong; apparently, its only 64k). _________________ Asus RT-N16 on dd-wrt.v24-r27506_K3.0_mega

I am using this as a router with the wifi disabled. After getting it upgraded to the 3x kernel, I flashed DD-WRT v3.0-r30949 big (12/15/16). NVRAM is correctly reporting at 64KB for me. Router has been stable for me for about a week now without any hiccups. My modem delivers 100mbps down and 10mbps up and the RT-16 passes my full speed without issue. When download speeds approach max throughput, the router cpu is in the 80% usage range so I'd say it can comfortably handle up to around 100mbps wan speeds. If you have a faster connection to the net, a faster router is likely a requirement. This is still a nice piece of hardware considering its age. Thanks go out to the ddwrt devs for still supporting it.
I've been having issues flashing dd-wrt from Asus 3.0.0.4.
It says: firware upgrade unsuccessfully. It may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again.
dd-wrt.v24-18024_NEWD-2_K2.6_megawill not install.
I managed to get dd-wrt.v24-29048_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N16.trx to install.
Strange thing is I can only connect to the router via wifi. ethernet will not work regardless of whether I designate the IP to the NIC or not. WIFI connects, no problem.
Router IP is 192.168.2.1
The build looks like it's incompatible with my RT-N16...
Can't do any firmware updates over WIFI so not sure what to do from here.
