First off all i'd like to thank all dd-wrt developers and the community as a whole for creating such a great alternate firmware for so many devices, for such a long period of time. My last encounter with dd-wrt was many years ago, finding myself here again brings back really nice memories
(kinda off topic but needed so say it anyway)

An AC5300 owner came to me with a wifi problem, in short the 2.4ghz band dies after about an hour, can't find anything in the default logs on the stock firmware web UI.

It either dies a couple off seconds, all devices lose connection, SSID is out of the air, comes back and all devices reconnect.
or
It just dies, all devices disconnect and i you have to reboot the box in order to get it back up.

Tried several stock firmware versions, but all have the same issue.

Box is running around 16 clients over 2.4ghz wifi, 5ghz is fine and ethernet is fine too.

So, I figured I would try dd-wrt instead, but grinding trough the forums some issues i was reading about gave me some questions I hope someone here can answer for me, and maybe it can help out other ac5300 installing dd-wrt on their devices.

My first and most obvious question is the following:
Why is the Asus AC 5300 not in the router database?

While seeking in this forum a found several topics about he ac5300, including users running dd-wrt.
Since its not in the database it took me quite a while to find a build that should work on the ac5300.

I did found this one:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=304044&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=ac5300&start=0

Router: Asus RT-AC5300

Status: ok
Reset: Yes
Errors:
wl0
Received (RX)1579 OK, 3 errors
Transmitted (TX)9226 OK, no error

wl1
Received (RX)2404885 OK, 2 errors
Transmitted (TX)5833805 OK, no error

wl2
Received (RX)0 OK, 2 errors
Transmitted (TX)7269 OK, no error

5ghz wireless strength is weak. About 63% on wl1, and only 15% on wl2. I'm only about 20 feet away with no walls blocking the router.

VLAN 2 and 4 show up as red, and 1 is yellow in the management page, though seem to work fine.

The LED on / off button on the side doesn't seem to do anything.

When the router starts up all LEDs are the correct color. Once the network gets up the network status LED, incorrectly, changes to red.

CPU temperature ranges from 66 to 68 degrees celsius.

Overall, I think the performance has improved for the AC5300.

Some Quesions about installing this build:
Coming from a stock firmware, whats the best way to flash this box?

1. Reset default values, Boot to rescue mode, use the Asus firmware restoration tool to upload the .trx file to the box.

2.Reset default values, Upload the .trx file from the default firmware webgui

I'm confused because looking at the dd-wrt Wiki I need to clear NVRAM, but using the default 30/30/30 method will not work on Asus devices because they go to rescue mode is this correct?

When i read the Asus RT-N66U wiki page for example I read about flashing via the rescue mode when they mention:
Quote:
Flash the initial DD-WRT build (e.g.) Asus-RT-N66U_18946_mini.trx build and upload.

Do i need an 'initial DD-WRT build' ?

Then i found this topic, it was helpfull but also got me worried:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=300549&highlight=ac5300

There talking about older builds here, but are any of the problems solved?

Asus ac5300 running the latest flash, Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r30432 std (08/16/16 and the lan ports are working BUT dhcp is not working on the lan ports.

DHCP works fine for wireless connections but not the lan ports.

Setting a static ip address on the computer connected to a lan port and data flow works just fine.

With the DHCP not working on the lan ports I can see how people might think that the lan ports are not working.

Annoying but functional. Hopefully that might shed some light on this issue.

If i'm posting this in the wrong place please let me know.

I've bricked a unit using the 30-30-30 method. Use restore defaults instead.

I bought a second unit and its been running DD-WRT v3.0-r30471 std (08/24/16) for almost 4 days now.

Any idea how to recover the original unit? I do get an adhoc wireless network but can't connect to it. No connection via a lan port.

I can't have a unit that costs 400+ brick that isnt mine Wink

Hope someone can sort out some of this confusion

I'm in the same boat as you. I cant seem to find a stable build for this router. I am on DD-WRT v3.0-r39960M kongac (06/08/19).

Is there a build that does not have the 2.4ghz issues?

Please let me know.

I see that kong as released 40270, anyone tried it yet?

Fair enough, the original poster did mention his fear of installing DDWRT and I can see why. It seems the AC5300 support is not where it should be but I think its a matter of getting to the right DDWRT version. Which is why I replied to it, I cant find anyone saying flat out this is the recommended build to use. THanks for the links though, ill keep looking

I am running DD-WRT v3.0-r39960M on a few of the AC5300s. I have not had luck with BS versions. For some reason they knock out the lan. Download the trx file from Kongs site and install it. Then install the 39960m version.

I no longer run the default wifi settings. Long ago I found a thread that had a break down of wifi settings. I went with these settings and have not had problems since.

Now I have had problems where my 2.4 completely disappears and I have to telnet and do an erase nvram and restore my settings and only a certain backup has worked. This unit was running at 85 deg. cels. I have moved it in to AC and it has been running good. But I am afraid to reboot it and lose the 2.4ghz again.

THis is the same issue I have. I have 2.4ghz disappaer and then the whole router goes down with it. I cant connect to 5ghz nothing. The only thing I can do is reboot the router and sometimes i have to wait for it to come back 5-20mins at a time. I have changed a lot of settings and nothing has worked to address this drop of 2.4ghz. I guess your in the same boat with no solution. Ive updated to the latest kong and it has the same issue.

If you cannot run a current build r50176 or later, standard or experimental, after reset, manually reconfigure:
Recommended: R7800 (XR450/XR500), R7500v2, EA8500 (serial flash), R9000 (R8900/XR700), x86 (J4125).

TLDR Broadcom bad, no open source drivers.

There is a bug that several users and myself have confirmed that causes instability and loss of the 2.4 GHz radio when the configuration exceeds 64 KiB of the 128 KiB allowable. Reduce your configuration to below 64 KiB, then reboot, and see if that helps.

This might seem like a dumb question, but how can you reduce your config size? Mine is at 71 KiB / 128 KiB. I rarely have this issue now but do on occasion still have 2.4 drop. I'm on Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r48425 std (02/24/22) best firmware so far. I assume its just commands, scripts etc that take up the space, or is it other stuff that makes a difference here? Thanks for the info.

71 KB is huge what do you have installed ?

Most routers do not have more than 64 KB.

Things you can do to reduce nvram size is reset to defaults and put only the things you need in.

If that does not help add the following line to startup:
Code:
for line in `nvram show | grep =$ `; do var=${line%*=}; nvram unset $var; done

Be sure to make a backup before doing this and do not use it if you use WireGuard!

Thanks for the info, I got mine down to 63kib now. Curious what does that startup command do? Does it force the router to not keep the config in NVram? Also looking at my other 2 routers that i use as client bridges there configs are a lot smaller and for the most part they keep the same startup, shutdown and firewall commands. The commands are the only thing besides device labels on my main router that i can think of that use the NVram. I had to force labels on a bunch of smart home devices that refuse to have more than a * for a name.

Removes empty variables.

Maybe this router is not reset in a while and has a lot of redundant settings, in that case resetting to defaults and put settings in manually might help

Thanks I ran it but did not make a difference, I'm below 65kib now and I believe its labeling all the smart home devices that really make this large, I wonder if there is a better way to do this. I have yet to find one.

I might do that, I think the labeling of my devices causes the large NVram but you could be right.

If you use WireGuard it can remove keys so than use this (experimental) script:
for line in $(nvram show | grep '=$' | grep -v '=.*=' ); do var=${line%*=}; nvram unset $var; done
