Recently got a R7800 and have the following questions.

(1) Some posts had mentioned that the version of the router needs to be one that can have dd-wrt installed. The box I got does not say anything on router version. I guess I'll need to open the box and check the actual router to figure that.

Once I open the box, what versions of this router is compatible with dd-wrt?

(2) What version of dd-wrt should one install?

from the one on myopenrouter site or the one from this site?

pros, cons of the above 2 installs?

I've only seen one thread where someone had a problem with an R7800 and that was made in Thailand instead of China. Maybe he just had a bad router, some factory defect or who knows.

Maybe they were referring to the stock firmware version number? Some routers you need to downgrade stock firmware past a certain point in order to flash DD-WRT from the stock web interface.

Also, R7800 has TFTP recovery mode you can use. You shouldn't have a problem either way.

I looked at that openrouter download page and they are all old builds of Voxel or modified DD-WRT.

Here are the real download pages for these firmwares.

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2020/

https://www.voxel-firmware.com/Downloads/Voxel/html/r7800.html

There are build threads in this Atheros forum, one for each with user feedback, if you want to read about people's experiences.

Personally, I use 12-29-2019-r41813 and waiting for the next build after 01-14-2020-r41986.

Thanks for the info. Was surprised that the box didn't have any Version info etc. and hence wanted to ask first before opening the box.

Thanks for the info.

I'd seen the guide and had already downloaded the instructions. But as I mentioned, wanted to be sure about Hardware version etc and of course the source of dd-wrt.

That 'Bible' is just too long.. informative yes,, but too long... Razz

In the first post is the guide you have downloaded, in the second post the file for first flash.

In theory you can use a more recent file for first flash because for every build there is one, see:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2020/01-14-2020-r41986/netgear-r7800/

But the one in the Install thread is the one we know it works

From the guide:
Quote:
3. Get DDWRT file. For a first flash coming from stock you need a file ending with .img. Subsequent flashing can be done with files ending on .bin.
A known good option is to use the Kong file (https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=44456 ) found in the second post of this thread: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=320614

For BS files go to ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2020/ choose the build number of your liking and go the R7800 directory and load the .img files, not all users report success with files from BS, it probably depends on the used builds.
