Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if I am posting in the right spot.
I am currently running a Linksys WRT600n and am considering upgrading it since the F/W is old and it does not have all of the OPENVPN options that I need.
I am considering a Linksys WRT1900ACS or either a Netgear R7000 or R8000.
Before I go any further I just wanted to see if DD-WRT is supported on these units and if there was a stable F/W available.
I checked the router database and there is an entry for a WRT1900AC ... will this work on the WRT1900ACS?
Also, I noticed that there is no entry in the database for the Netgear R7000 or R8000. But there are router sites that are selling these routers with a pre-flashed version of DD-WRT. Is there a version available for download that I can use on either of these Netgear routers?
DD-WRT has been stable on the R7000 for like 2 years.
I've been up for 46 days using DD-WRT on the WRT1900AC.
The way I understand it, all DD-WRT builds are beta. It's like a standard disclaimer. _________________ Routing:.......Asus RT-AX88U (Asuswrt-Merlin 384.14) Switching:....Netgear GS608_V3 & GS605_V4, TrendNet TEG-S82G & TEG-S50G
I use Kong because he's actually using his builds. BS is building for hundreds of routers and can't test them all. Think of Kong as an alpha tester with us being the beta testers.
You need to flash the .IMG file from within the Linksys stock firmware GUI. _________________ Routing:.......Asus RT-AX88U (Asuswrt-Merlin 384.14) Switching:....Netgear GS608_V3 & GS605_V4, TrendNet TEG-S82G & TEG-S50G
The WRT1900AC has two partitions on the flash. If you flash the DD-WRT image file from the stock firmware, it should leave you with the stock firmware loaded in partition 1 and DD-WRT in partition 2.
To go back to stock, all you have to do is press and hold the reset button until the power LED starts to flash (~15 seconds). Once you've done that, power the router off and back on. Wait for the power LED to light and then turn it off and back on again.
Turn it off and back on 3 times in a row and then after the 3rd time, wait. It should boot back to stock.
I actually don't use the .BIN file for DD-WRT at all. When I want to upgrade to a new build, I boot back to stock and use the IMG file again. That way I always have stock and DD-WRT ready to go, just in case. _________________ Routing:.......Asus RT-AX88U (Asuswrt-Merlin 384.14) Switching:....Netgear GS608_V3 & GS605_V4, TrendNet TEG-S82G & TEG-S50G

htismaqe,
I understand the Wiki install notes is really for broadcom devices. The linksys ARM/Marvell products have different button hold times, and don't use the button 30:30:30 reset.
Is there detailed install notes on how to flash these ARM/Marvell products? _________________ Linksys WRT1900AC-V1 (BS 29048) • Motorola SB6141 • Netgear Gigabit Switches • 16 Wired/12 Wireless
I don't know of any detailed notes but it's pretty straightforward, honestly.
And don't confuse what I detailed there as a 30/30/30. You only hold the reset button one time and you release it before you ever power the router off.
Linksys put a failsafe in the router that if you reset it and then power it on/off 3 times, it reverts to the last good firmware. _________________ Routing:.......Asus RT-AX88U (Asuswrt-Merlin 384.14) Switching:....Netgear GS608_V3 & GS605_V4, TrendNet TEG-S82G & TEG-S50G
Keep in mind that every time that you flash the router, the new firmware will go into the other boot partition. This means that, for example, if you want to keep stock Linksys firmware in boot partition 1 (for recovery), you always need to be running that Linksys stock firmware in partition 1 when you flash new firmware (which goes into boot partition 2), and use the "factory_to_ddwrt.img" and not the ".bin" images. If you flash a new dd-wrt release using the ".bin" image when you're running dd-wrt firmware in boot partition 2, you'll overwrite the stock Linksys fimrware in boot partition 1. Which may or may not suit your needs, just be aware that happens *smile*.
Thanks guys ... you were really helpful with all of this.
It seems easier that I thought and am looking forward to the router to arrive so I can try this. I heard its an awesome router and great performance so I am definitely looking forward to that!
