Hi all,

Just followed the instructions at the DDWRT wiki to successfully flash my WRT54G2 V1.

All is well and it is booted up, but I know I should upgrade it to the latest stable build.

The Wiki suggests getting the latest stable build recommendation from here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51486

...but when I go there, Note 3 says to use the BrainSlayer builds. OK, fine...but when I click the BrainSlayer build link, the BrainSlayer FTP link is down? ( ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn12548/ )

Anybody know the best suggestion for a build for this router and where I can get it from as that link isn't working?

Cheers and thanks for any help! Smile

The eko/V24_TNG/ builds disappeared; there have been several threads regarding it, and archive.org might find some. However, that model should be able to run the latest ./broadcom/ micro builds. I have an old WRT using 31825 which I plan to update to the latest soon.

Thanks jwh7....so you mean the 'dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin' build found here, for example? I see none in that directory specifically for the WRT54G2 V1...?

Correct, the micro generic is used; note that the wiki does not mention any model-name-specific build, just 'micro'.

Not sure where this should go, but I've had trouble upgrading DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54G2 v1.0.

Previously, back in 2015, I'd gone from stock firmware to DD-WRT r28598 (12-24-2015) without issue. Just now I tried to update to latest - with a 30-30-30 reset - and FAILED. Was left with (mostly) a brick.

Pulled the power, plugged it back in, flashed older firmware with TFTP in the first few seconds after boot, and got it back.

So far, what I see from my testing:
r28598 - 12-24-2015 - loads
r30949 - 12-15-2016 - loads
r31899 - 04-24-2017 - loads
r32170 - 06-01-2017 - loads
r32597 - 07-08-2017 - BRICK
r32753 - 07-19-2017 - BRICK
r33006 - 08-03-2017 - BRICK

I've tried to do a 30-30-30 reset each time, and I'll admit that I am no expert at this and mostly following tutorials. But it looks like something might be up with current builds and the WRT54G2 v1.0.

The "New Build" threads would be a good place, which already mention this, amongst other places. Good to know tftp works to restore it though. Smile

Thanks man! I knew someone would have commented on it by now, but better safe than sorry. Smile

I just got one of these at a yard sell for 45 cents lol.

I flashed to ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/09-19-2017-r33375/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin

Runs a treat, I have setup as a "repeater" Wifi-Wan (Client + Virtual AP)

Im only testing it with me as a single user on it but surprised how well it's doing for a old router.

I came on looking for a micro+ or micro+ssh build though.. I can't seem to find any let alone a current one (Have the feeling no longer supported)

So I am sorry to hijack the thread Embarassed I just had a minor question about all of this after reading.

Have an old wrt54gs 1.1 I believe the build is (gotta double check but im 85-90% sure its 1.1 that is running on what the wiki called old stable for that router. (Build 14929) though its quite an old build (2010). Is that a bad build to use anymore then due to security issues? I have stayed on it as that box only serves as a client bridge and frankly is quite stable on it.

In short, is it bad to stay on the older build reccomended in the wiki and I should move elsewhere or is the router perfectly fine on that build? Thanks

If you're using it as a bridge I'd assume this means it's protected from external traffic via another router so internal security is not a big issue on most home lans.

Im not sure what vulnerabilities a build that old would have but I doubt they'd affect you.

Upgraded v3.0-r44251 micro (08/27/20) to address latency issues I was experiencing with r32170. r44251 seems at least as stable as r32170, but the latency issues remain. r44251 does have better wired raw throughput numbers than r32170 by maybe 5% for both uni- and bi-directional iperf TCP testing.

WRT54G2 is not a good platform if you're using latency sensitive apps, like RDP. For any other traffic, it seems fine.

I've flashed mine with actual latest build, and dicovered the firewall bug which I've already reported, and has been dealt with by Brainslayer now. In the short time I had to test the router, it worked well with every application. I used RDP both by VPN and directly.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm also running RDP (1920x1080, 15-bit color) over Cisco AnyConnect VPN. I've also tested with two different WRT54G (v2 and v5 of the original WRT54G) also running r44406, along with other routers running their respective stock firmwares, but this particular G2 really struggles with latency. The inconsistent lagginess with the mouse effectively makes RDP unusable behind this router.
