Greetings to all DD-WRT community!

@mrjcd thank you very much for your tutorial.

I would like to install DD-WRT to my Linksys EA8500. I am trying to do this at the moment. I have read several pages in the topic but anyway a have some questions, please do not throw stones in me if my questions are stupid.

Question #1: What is the most stable version of DD-WRT firmware for Linksys EA8500?

I have read this article:

Code:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_EA8500

as i understood i should download from Betas?

I was willing to download 01-21-2020-r42054 from Betas. Am i right?

But! DD-WRT wiki also has this page:

Code:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

I've found other link on the page I've posted above. Found the name of my router model, pressed "enter".

Code:
https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database

But it says "BETA".

Question #2: Which page\version should i trust?

Please sorry for silly questions perhaps and some mistakes. English is not my native.

Regards

1) Do NOT use the router database for recommended builds.

2) Whatever mrjcd is running is usually pretty stable

3) This firmware has been in beta status forever. If that is an issue, then feel free to try a different firmware.

@Mrjcd thank you very much again for your great manual.

According to your manual I found this sentence:

So do you reccomend to intall brainslayer build r33772 ?
But this version 2017 year. I wondering a bit i thought new (2019-2020) versions should be better then older versions.

Kind regards

PuTTy-TFTP.zip includes everything, even a confirmed EA8500-factory-to-ddwrt.img to use for the initial serial flash. After this serial process you can upgrade to r41813, r42054 or whatever you want normally via Web GUI or Telnet/SSH.

Edit: factory-to-ddwrt.img for r41174 is confirmed working for the initial flash. You may be able flash straight to a current build, but you would be the one testing it so YMMV.

It just depends on what all you are doing with the EA8500.
Yes, r33772 is an old build but still works ok for most anything you would want.
'unbound' in that old of build will NOT work since ICANN changed the Root DNS Zone Key for DNSSEC -- I think back in October 2018

If you read further on that same page you will also see link to r42078 which is NOT a public release but is what I am using.
It has most all latest DD-WRT updates but not the newest usmbd that Brainslayer is working on but most likely you don't need that anyways.
usmbd was in a previous version for the EA8500 and will likely be in it again very soon but that is all very newass stuff

The very best thing for you to do is read the 'New Build' posts in this forum to see what is what.
New DD-WRT builds are usually bleeding-edge and way ahead of any other 3rd party firmware.
Some may work ok for you some may not --- it depends on what all you are doing.

Everyone asks what is the best DD-WRT firmware Rolling Eyes ---- that depends on many many things
Just get familiar with your router and use what suits you. Cool

Mrjcd again thank you very much! I am simple person. I had some problems with WI-FI (drop down accidently) on newest Linksys firmware. I decided to solve the problem.

Went to google > found solution (to downgrade official Linksys firmware)- then found DD-WRT forum and noticed that i can install dd-wrt firmware on my Linksys Smile

That is all!

As i understood the versions in your manual http://mrjcd.com/EA8500_DD-WRT/

would be enough for my needs.

Thank you again!

The problem is solved. But I did not swap TX & RX wires.

To be honest, i can't understand how i solve it.

I changed "remote character set" in "translation" menu, but its did not work.

Then i changed speed(baud) from default 9600:

to speed in your manual 115200:

And it works.

Is this a possible?

Kind regards!

P.S. of course I changed COM3 to COM7 like says in my Device Manager.
