As best I know, Kong owns an EA8500 and so he supports it, for now. Brainslayer builds have been junk since December 10th for EA8500; ever since he moved to K4.4 builds. I don't use the USB, but know that others do and both ports work just fine.

Use either mixed or mixed AC/N. I use mixed. Use channel 161 set to VHT80 and use LL for the bonding extension channel.

try AC/N mixed
CH 161 (upper)
wide HT 40
domain = US
There is not a problem with 5GHZ on proper channel

Is this possible due to a broken 1 wire antenna?
2Ghz mode works fine
Set the extension channel to LL, lower.
Enable short preamble
Enable both types of user beam forming.
If it doesn't work then, then yes the bunk antenna is preventing 5ghz to work. If one antenna is bad, then I think you will only be able to do a 20mhz wide signal.

Just wanted to chime in that I was also experiencing some issues with my 5 Ghz after updating to Kong build r35700M. Sometimes my computer would have issues connecting to 5 GHz. Now, I didn't get to spend much time with the older version so not sure if something wrong with my EA8500 or something with the more recent builds but maybe just me.
I haven't tried out the optimized settings you guys have stated yet but I'll give them a try to see if I can have 5 Ghz work properly. I noticed that one of my computers that connects using 5 GHz has pretty bad link quality after switching from Linksys to DD-WRT but again, not sure what is the root cause. My Realtek Wifi adapter (8812AU) states the signal strength is 100% and link quality is 90% almost all the time when I used Linksys but now with the newer version of DD-WRT, the signal strength is still 100% but the link quality will go from 60 to 90%.

After flashing, the serial console gives a ton of JFFS read errors simply stating there was an "ECC error". When I looked around on the web, I found the issue might be due to different commands in the bootloader from what the OS is trying to install.
The bootloader is U-Boot_2012.07 for an ARMv7 chip.
I've verified the error to occur with both the newest beta version (05-13-2018) and the Kong build of 05-08-2018.
Trying to flash the image that originally came with the instructions on http://mrjcd.com/EA8500_DD-WRT/ resulted in a USB error that prevented booting.
I'm not really sure what to do then: should I try changing some bootloader configurations, flashing a new bootloader, or trying to find a build that works? I'd also really like to know what's actually causing this error...
