Have been told that my old Linksys wrt54g router is able to be flashed with the dd-wrt software, which is good. But... I have no idea which 'version' the router is and there's nothing on the box itself. How to know which software to download and flash it with...? Any clues anyone?
Duh I'm sooo dumb sometimes! Always read the small print eh? You're right, under the main title sticker is a very small V 1.1 so I guess that's it. Thanks anyway. It's a no longer used router and I like breaking things so I'll go ahead anyway, if nothing else lots of fun and no harm done, file under waste!
I didn't realize there were WRT's that ran that slow...

But I guess that means you can try overclocking it. Fwiw, I've had 27858 running on a GL and GS for over a month, zero issues (but you should use 28211 instead of 27858, if you want to try recent builds).
Hey jwh7, I have an old original WAP54G you can play with when you run out of things to do
These are nasty little boxes and I remember back in the day the twin to
this one is one of the very few units I bricked beyond repair may it RIP ..
Just for a grin I had to see if this one was still alive -- plugged it in
and connected my phone - Droid Turbo Max to it wireless oh what fun
As you can see from its load average it is easily stressed.. this has the very old 9517 build
Wow, I'd forgotten about the VINT stuff...my bad. My GSv1.1 was a corerev 7, as I recall, and could use NEWD. That wiki is pretty confusing (/surprise); reference to "v23 SP2" and "V24 RC6.X builds", then VINT at the bottom. This is pretty helpful though, obviously in congruence with the Peacock, which has the link to the old -old- builds (noted by mrjcd):

[2013-09-01 WRT54G v1.1 with recent Linksys firmware] Signed on to the Linksys, did a factory reset. Used the web browser to upload a mini-Generic release (happened to be build 13064, from the Router Database page). Router rebooted to DD-WRT (that was easy!). Did a 30-30-30 reboot, and DD-WRT was running. Uploaded the std_Generic build (also 13064). Found that odd things happened from to time, and the site survey did not work. Re-read the Peacock post, 13064 is not a good release - DO NOT TRUST THE ROUTER DATABASE to recommend a release. Did a telnet into the router to determine corerev (see Peacock step 4, nvram get wl0_corerev) to confirm that corerev=4. Therefore, I needed a VINT build. I used EKO VINT 12548, and everything was rosy. Then tried EKO VINT 13491, and again everything was great.
