I have something you can try on your non unit, since the radios do not come up in time, play with the radio cpu cores and change their clk, stop the unit at cfe and use these commands:

nvram set 0:cpuclk=600
nvram set 1:cpuclk=600
nvram set 2:cpuclk=600
nvram commit
go

Try 700,800,900, does it boot with any of the freqs?

No difference. Still won't boot.

It doesn't work, tried all of them (600 to 900)

But why I can't update Kong's new release ( http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.K3_R8500.chk) with date 2017-02-03 12:25 23M in netgear's web GUI?

If you already have dd-wrt on it you use http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_R8500.bin

Thanks for the suggestion. I get dd wrt working with "K3_R8500_17-Feb-2016.chk", I tried upgrading with the mentioned .bin file however once again, boot loop starts, last message:

"reboot in 10 seconds..."

Thanks, @Malachi, I'm running netgear's firmware now. My R8500's hardware is made in Vietnam and is the MP2 version.

I can flush netgear's firmware version V1.0.2.80_1.0.71 which my previous firmware is 1.0.2.86_1.0.75
waiting for support for R8500 HW version MP2.

I don't know if this is really related to where it was made because mine is Made in China and it doesn't accept those firmware other people say are accepted by Made in China ones.

I've tried all firmware available, from the initial Netgear release to the latest one, also third party ones like Kong's and more.

For mine it seems the only one working is the K3_R8500_17-Feb-2016.chk by Tathagata
I'm so freaking stuck with this piece of dead great equipment.

I've done the clock fix and more, I have used nvram erase before each firmware upload. I've done everything for many days tbh.
Any help is appreciated.
@<Kong>

I'm willing to use TeamViewer if any of you experts want to check the codes.

I have been using the Original X8 with the curvy Top which I believe is the China made one. I don't have any random reboots and the unit is stable with one exception that my VPN becomes unstable with lower speeds after about 2 days.

Possibly some kind of memory leak. I've been using an old version of kong's build from few months ago.

I came here to check if I should update to the latest firmware of kong or should I leave it the way it is.

The wifi bands are associated correctly without auto and the astril applet works well.

Any advise. Much much appreciated.

For info, I tried the latest BS builds and it seems that 30949 is the last one to work properly on the China / MP1 variant. Builds 31533, 31544, 31571 all say "Image too big for partition : Linux" when you try to upgrade.

I've started a separate thread for this and PM'ed BS to let them know.

If you were able to get the original builds to apply, then updating is generally not a problem, the problems relate to a new variant that has some updated hardware, others relate to bad hardware floating around on eBay where things like board_data (config/calibration) partitions are missing

I'm not aware of any issues with the Kong build, however there does seem to be an unrelated problem with the latest BS build. See my previous post detailing that problem.

The best thing to do is to backup your config (and jffs partition if you are using it) then give the upgrade a go. Its very likely to be successful.

If the worst happens, then a quick serial connection and 2 minutes with the CFE to download the current firmware gets you back to where you are now, so you can always back out.

BTW - on the bottom of the router is a sticker, that's where it says where its manufactured.

Please let us know how you get on.

Could someone link me to the build that worked for @labo, I had the same problem as he did and I'd like to give it a try on my unit.

There was a test build that was on Kong's download site - think it was in a folder called test or beta.

As its not in the download area any more, I would imagine that the fix was rolled into the latest build making the folder unnecessary, hence its removal.

Suggest you try the latest Kong build.

I don't think Kong made any updates on this.
The test firmware from Kong worked for me, but didn't for many others.
