DO NOT use the firmware images from the DD-WRT website past r30432 or it’ll send your DIR880L into a boot loop.

Do the following to upgrade your DIR880L to DD-WRT:

1. Download the appropriate factory-to-ddwrt firmware image for DIR880L from the link below (from the folder named factory-to-ddwrt)

https://app.box.com/s/b4v1s342ef2dpd52j02lqtuzi1oiipco

2. Upgrade your DIR880L using firmware downloaded in Step 1. You can do it in the D-Link firmware upgrade page.

3. If Step 2 is successful, you should be able to log in to DD-WRT at http://192.168.1.1

4. Download my latest build r33772 from the link above.

5. Upgrade your DIR880L again using DD-WRT firmware upgrade page.

6. After Step 5 completes, reset to factory default and start configuring your upgraded router.

I haven't tried my 880L, and I don't think the 880L is effected by newer FW updates like the 89xL series is however I just completed this and works for me on my 890L.
Can you try this and see if it helps you with your 880L:

Please DO NOT use firmware images past r30432 for DIR868 and DIR880 if downloaded from the DD-WRT website. It’ll send your router into a boot loop!

Upgraded to DD-WRT v3.0-r33772a quarkysg-std (11/18/17) and seems ok. Thanks!

Is that the latest stable version still? I see there are a lot of version on your share drive.

...nevermind. found the official version here:

Yes, you can use the official BS or Kong builds for DD-WRT for DIR-880L now. The bootloop issue has been fixed by BS.

My dir-880l is running DD-WRT v3.0-r37442 std (10/19/1Cool with your wlconf fix for vap. Is this still needed?

Unfortunately yes, it's still needed as far as I can tell. My DIR-880L also uses VAPs and without the fix, it will not work correctly. I don't see any commits by the devs to resolve this issue. My builds also contains patches to allow SFE to work with PBR.

So if you need VAPs, either use the workaround script to stop/start nas & wlconf, or use my build for your DIR-880L as it basically does the same thing.

I would love to try one of your builds. The ones that I have are rather outdated (ddwrt-webflash-dir868-880-r33986a-patched.bin). Is there a more recent build available for download?

Thanks again for your help with solving my dir-880l boot loop and vap problems.

Hi @quarkysg
Just followed your steps exactly, and everything was OK, but in the end that you say Factory Reset, I made a Hard reset with the hole, maybe you have said to do it from the menu, now my router is not powering normally, just the Power led blinks regularly. as some time have passed since I had not done any dd-wrt upgrades, now I don't know how to revive my router. can you help me please with the steps?

P.S. I did a 30-30-30 reset now but again the same

I have firmware v3.0-r34929c and I tried the most current 880L firmware from the site and your build "ddwrt-webflash-dir868-880-r38132a-patched.bin". However when I try to update it always seems to hang or fail. Have to do a 30-30-30 reset to get back to the firmware I have. I switched from Chrome to Firefox but that didn't change much. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
