This may be suited better for the Advanced Networking forum, not sure.
I need a network switch in a room of my new house that isn't easy to get an Ethernet cable to. I don't want or need this R6250 to be a WAP or a VAP or a repeater for that matter, just a switch, connected wirelessly. I will use a single connection to a stand-alone 8 port managed switch from this router. I may want to also carry 3 VLANs over it, if even possible. It will be connecting to a EA8500 via 5ghz. I am thinking WDS, but not sure, as I don't want it to be a repeater at all. Just a single wireless connection to the EA8500, then for LAN use only.
Any suggestions on the best way to achieve this? _________________ Linksys EA8500 (Internet Gateway, AP/VAP) - DD-WRT r53562

@egc Thanks for the info. In your opinion, would I would be better off just purchasing another EA8500 (I have a spare, but would rather keep it as such) so I can do this via WDS? _________________ Linksys EA8500 (Internet Gateway, AP/VAP) - DD-WRT r53562

So I ended up in the end running an ethernet cable to a GB managed switch. Working well. I also went ahead and got yet another EA8500 from ebay for $35/w free shipping. Great deal!
I did this because I wanted to test the throughput of a WDS configuration. Got it set up and it's actually pretty impressive. I wanted to have essentially a wifi portable switch, which this setup has provided. It is presently providing a switch to my ATGames digital pinball machine which the WiFi is total crap, but now that it's hard-wired (virtually), it's working perfectly. Not a permanent solution by any means, but getting me by for now. _________________ Linksys EA8500 (Internet Gateway, AP/VAP) - DD-WRT r53562
