I was wondering if there is enough memory on the 3300 to support DD-WRT with OpenVPN in server mode.
Anyone know? Or at least know what the hardware specs on the 3300 are?\
I have one, with stock firmware, that I planned to use as the "other end" of an 802.11g/n to ethernet bridge, plugged into a firewall that does OpenVPN (among other things).
But, if I can get DD-WRT on it, with OpenVPN, it frees up that firewall for something else (since it's a full-blown dual Athlon with 2G RAM and 1/2T disk that also serves as a file server).
On Edit: I see from the hardware page that it has 16 MB RAM and 4 MB Flash.

Hi can u be more specific which file to download there r 30 files in tht dir thanks...
Yes. If you are upgrading from stock netgear firmware use dd-wrt.v24-10776_NEWD_mini_wndr3300.chk
It will install from the netgear router web interface. Once you are running dd-wrt, future upgrades use the ...NEWD_mini.bin version.
As always follow the standard precautions when upgrading firmware (wired connection, reset to default settings etc).
Also, can I upgrade from that to a version that supports openvpn?
Yes. The latest one is the one you reference above in eko/v24_tng/svn10776. That is the one I am using. I have only run the mini version so I don't know if the standard version runs on the wndr3300. When the wndr3300 was first supported by dd-wrt the standard version bricked the router so I would proceed with caution if you install anything other than the mini version.

Yes iam upgrading from netgear stock firmware to dd-wrt
thanks i will try this version...
hey guys, i've asked Eko to post on here with a step by step on how to get dd-wrt running and the known problems. hopefully he has time to give us the authoritative dish.
if anyone else wants to post their steps to dd-wrt success, in a mini-guide format or something, please share.
You upgrade the wndr3300 exactly the way you would using the netgear firmware. No change just you use the dd-wrt .chk version. Once dd-wrt is installed, use the .bin versions. Right now, only the mini version is confirmed to be working on the wndr3300.
Currently v24 sp2 is in development. Sometimes eko has the latest version sometimes brainslayer has the latest version. That's why there are references to two different directories.
For more information about installing there is lot's of information on the dd-wrt site. See
To get the 5ghz radio to work, you need to set wl0 to NA or A mode. Otherwise, it will be using 2.4ghz.
There are still some minor ui issues with dd-wrt. I've noticed incorrect frequencies listed in the radio ui. In addition, there isn't any way to turn off the dome light. The dome light is not a big deal for me because it doesn't affect the router in any way. But you can see all known bugs in the bugtracker database.

I have a Netgear 3300 with stock firmware, and I'm wondering whether I should try DD-WRT on it, or use a Linksys 350n instead. I DO want to run an OpenVPN server on the device, so the Standard or MEGA versions interest me the most and that seems to rule out the 3300 these days since (a) only Mini is verified as working and (b) other versions have been known to brick it (Can it be unbricked in any way? JTAG?)
Currently I have a PC dual-homed on the (stock firmwware) 3300, who's WAN port connects to the internet, and on the LAN side of a 8 port Netgear router.
The 3300 side is the "BLACK" net -- considered untrusted, and it serves one wireless media PC (nano-ITX in a Silverstone LC08 case) via an ethernet to 802.11bgn bridge.
The non-wireless Netgear router side is the "RED" net -- trusted.
The PC that spans both serves as an email sink, file server, and firewall, running an OpenVPN server in briging mode between the physical RED net and wireless VPN clients on the BLACK net.
My reasons for having a router handle firewalling are that using the same box as a firewall and fileserver is somewhat at cross-purposes: routing across the VPN is sometimes interrupted by local serving of files. Of course, an "all in one" box "seemed like a good idea at the time", but keeping firewall and services separate is better (lest one accidently offer a service on a net where one shouldn't).
So, I've been eyeing putting DD-WRT on a wireless router. If I can only install mini safely on the 3300, I'd still have to run the OpenVPN server on another box. Hence thinking about the 350n.
It would simplify the topology, since the WAN and WLAN ports could be untrusted (BLACK) and the LAN ports (perhaps with a single exception) be trusted (RED).
Alternately, what's the best non-wireless router to put Standard or Mega DD-WRT on between the existing RED and BLACK net, taking over the firewall functionality of the file server?
just updated to the 10776 (or whatever it is) build! had it running for a couple of days now.
the only issue that i've seen so far is that when I set the 5ghz radio to NA-only mode, I can't connect with my macbook over 802.11A. however if I set it to A-only mode then it connects fine. so far this isnt a problem because I have no 5ghz N clients, but this may be a bug.
Other than that things have gone swell. All my clients work fine (using the 2.4ghz wireless for some and the 5ghz radio for others, as well as lan).
about to try out QoS, but otherwise I'm stoked. I've been stuck without DD-WRT since I got this router, and after getting used to the horrible netgear firmware i'm sooo happy!
So I have the latest firmware installed on my router and I have internet on all my computers...but when I go to setup the security settings I lose connection to either one or the other. For example, on the computer that functions through 2.4 Ghz I have to set the security settings to WPA Personal in order to get internet and for the computer that functions through 5 Ghz I have to set the security settings to WPA2 personal in order to get internet but I can never get internet on both at the same time. Is there anything I can do for this because I live in an apartment complex and I really need to secure my connection. Thanks.
