I got mine working. Silly me thought an rs232 adapter would work. I got a ttl and got it working. I had some errors but following some other posts, flashing an older 1.28 tomato did work, and from there dd-wrt.

I followed ziddey's advice and was successful in flashing my dir-868l from optimum.

Some notes for other nOObs like me.

You might need to solder on pins to be able to access the TTL. Those black things with pins are called header pins.

See attached pictures for putty settings


TTL pins order.


You will need to TTL reader, it's not the same as a serial reader. I used this and was very happy https://www.amazon.com/DSD-TECH-SH-U09C2-Debugging-Programming/dp/B07TXVRQ7V

The flashing: The correct command is
Code:
flash -noheader : nflash1.trx

Than you need to issue the command

go


To do the TFTP, view the wiki page for TFTP.

Please note, I was not able to flash d-link's firmware but advanced tomato worked like a charm.
