Flashed it this morning. So far so good. As I set things up I'll report back with my findings. Seems stable enough.

Confirmed working:
DHCP lease
Wireless w/ WPA2 Personal AES- 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz
DDNS(DynDNS)
Bandwidth graphs

I just received my Asus AC87 in the mail today and am wondering whether I should install Asuswrt-merlin or DD-WRT. I know Asuswrt-merlin is considered to be pretty stable but I prefer the DD-WRT interface.

you can always flash back and forth.

why not try merlin first for a week, and then switch over to dd-wrt, to compare.

I'm really interested in range and speed of this router. As my old linksys is really aging now and this router has DD-wrt support, i might order one soon as well.

Currently all reviews are based on old and crappy firmware (+/- august timeframe).
So if somebody has comments on current quality, please feel free to make some remarks.

You're right. I'll try Asuswrt-merlin a couple of weeks and then DD-WRT. If anybody is interested in VPN and overclocking I'll try both whenever possible.

Could someone post the steps required to flash a RT-AC87U with DD-WRT?

I need a step-by-step guide.

Thanks,

Reset the router to factory default. Flash this file ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/12-15-2014-r25648/asus-rt-ac87u/
Log in, reset to factory default.

How do you flash the file?

Step-by-step, how do you do it?

For example, for a particular Linksys you have to hold down the reset button the entire time.

I guess thats not the case with this one?

I don't know of a linksys you have to hold the reset button.
After you reset the router, log back into it, go the the firmware upgrade tab, then browse to where you downloaded the firmware, select it then hit upgrade. That's called flashing.

Maybe you should just stick with stock.

The linksys in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G28Ud46jA1A&spfreload=10

And definitely will not be keeping the stock firmware...

but thanks for your kind suggestions anyhow.

You don't hold the reset button the whole time. That was describing the 30/30/30 reset.
If it was needed I would have told you.
Have you used dd-wrt before? Why do you need it for the rt-ac87u?
Btw here are the instructions for the router in your YouTube link http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT150N_%26_WRT160N, which you should not follow.

No, "it" meaning the router. I guess I should have been specific.

I've been trying to access a USB connected to the router.

I haven't been able to but I'm wondering if it would be easier or harder if I flash the router.

Well, I flashed it.

About as easy as making mud actually.

...Thanks to the explanation from Malachi.

Now I'm trying to connect the USB (it is not a "NAS" per se).

I'm not sure why its so difficult. Do I really need to format and partition it (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_-_Format_and_Partition_External_Storage_Device) in order for it to be recognized by on the network?

Seems like over kill to me?

Has anyone done this successfully?
