can't tell you that --- builds have been pretty shitty this year on the E2500 and I haven't done ovpn anything on this router in couple years I reckon.
I thought r35531 mega [03/26/18] was ok and I just used it as a WAP but the HP Officejet 4622 e-All-in-One would not stay connected to it over 'bout an hour so I went back to trusty r33555 and has never been a problem since.
It is a WAP but also has guest network with bout 7 wireless clients connected all time plus 8 devices wired on backside of it. Best I remember you prolly won't get much out of ovpn anyways on the 300 MHz CPU........thinking maybe 8 ...maybe 10 mbps at best if config correctly -------- but thinking now days I think most ovpn requires at least 2048 bit keys so you won't get near that good
The r33555 (10/20/17) is considered old but heck --- you also have an old router.
I have several E2500 routers. Few months back I config one as my backup main router when I need to pull the main router EA8500 out for some reason.
I config the E2500 (using r33555) same as EA8500 was but no ovpn server, no USB share, & no 5GHz radio but it still works perfectly fine as backup router with 30 Static leases, wl0.1 and VLAN on port 4 guest network via br1 and the old 10/100 switch don't bother me too bad since I only have 50/50 connection from the ISP anyways. I've run it as main for several days before without no problem at all and I have lots going on thru my entire home network which actually includes two homes connected via WDS 'bout 500 meters apart.... but that's enough of my rambling

Supposedly, there is a V4 out, but no details on hardware yet. Waiting to see if I can get my hands on one to tear into to see what's what. (NOTE: It is supposed to be identical to the E5300, E5350, and E5400, and I am wondering if it will be either a Marvell, MediaTek, or QCA device - I am leaning towards Marvell, as a lot of newer Linksys E and EA devices seem to be using Marvell)
Digging thru my old notes looks like last ovpn I used on E2500 was with r33006.

Might be good with new build on that router but I can't say and I don't recall the ovpn version in r33555.
Might be (depending what you are doing) you need at least ovpn ver 2.4.6 or newer 2.4.7 ......just dunno
Don't worry with all that nonsense in link about 256k nvram on k3.x builds.... E2500 DD-WRT now days only has 64k but it's sill 256k nvram running r33555. Not sure when it was changed ... thinking maybe about a year back
As kernel-panic69 says any tomato firmware runs ok on the E2500 and ovpn is much easier to setup.
Only problem I had with tomato FW is 5GHz radio, if loaded would cause problems. Worked very well for long time if leave 5GHz disabled but iffin I gonna do that might as well just use DD-WRT
