I haven't been on here for awhile and I wanted to get an opinion from some of the devs, if they are willing to answer, or anyone who feels they have extensive experience with these 2 routers. Which is one is more stable and reliable based off stock and DD-WRT firmware? I appreciate anyone's input on this matter. I'm in the market for a new router and hear that these are the beasts to choose from.

R7000 by far is better off on DD-WRT than the RT-AC68U.

RT-AC68U on stock firmware beats the R7000 because the OEM firmware on the R7000 was shitty on it for me.

Pick your poison. Wink

I'd say R7000 though, it's a bit cheaper and Kong has put so much time into DD-WRT for the R7000 and it works well.

Ok I appreciate the feed back so quickly. So hardware wise other than processor. Your AC68U doesn't compare to your R7000? Also if money were not a factor would you still make the same decision on the R7000? The reason I'm so anally wanting every explanation other than "pick my poison" I just want an opinion on manufacturer too. Again Thanks! Very Happy

Better question. How is DD-WRT on the ASUS RT-AC68U? Is it harder to flash? Is it just as stable and reliable? I read that the R7000 is doing well with DD-WRT, but range has been hindered compared to stock firmware.

Range is always hindered when leaving OEM/Stock firmware.

DD-WRT on the RT-AC68U is ehh..
Kong DD-WRT on the RT-AC68U is fine though.

This is simply untrue...

Not for me, I've flashed many routers with DD-WRT and TomatoUSB and OpenWRT and my range has always decreased about 15%.

@murrkf @noobwrt

wouldnt this be related to TX power? but either way, i have not seen any drop in wireless range noobwrt. but judging by the amount of routers you have, i assume you have a house big enough for wireless range to be noticeable.

care to prove your claim with a video noobwrt?

@blazian

get the R7000 with kongs dd-wrt on it. it beats the teeth out of all other routers i have used so far. start with the initial flash, then flash latest build and everything in that build will just work. if there was anything buggy, it would be very little or hardly noticeable. at least that's what i experienced with my R6250 router.

Well as the hardware doesn't change and txpwr can be adjusted to the same or better output dd-wrt will always have equal or better range. The problem is you don't know how to setup things properly, because you don't know technical details of the standard. Just raising txpwr won't do anything if the radio limits it, e.g. because of regulation restrictions.

Output depends on a lot of things, including regulation domain, channel, width ... to get the best range you need to choose all the right parameters in order to get the highest output and that requires exact knowledge of the standard.

Kong DD-WRT on the RT-AC68U is fine though.

From latest firms Kong's range is better than stock one, you should now how to dial with settings, Tx 71 is Default and now more powered than early Kong's, you can go up to 999 and you'll be over OEM power.
Just an example, if you choose lower channel you don't get your full range, and so on.

@Blazian, BTW both have dual processor rt-ac68u form stock it has Dual core 800MHz CPU, r7000 from stock has faster Dual processor @ 1000Mhz and you can go to 1400Mhz without panic, mine lives @ 1200Mhz and just fine.
Just my 2 cts.

I've set it up all properly I can guarantee you that, I leave my TX power below 75 though. Are you saying raising my TX power would give me more signal strength? Last time I check Wi-Fi was bidirectional... Raising the TX on the router wouldn't change much, would it?

Just my two cents.

Before buying r7000 i was next to buy RT-AC68U but when met Kong's and checked that r7000 processor's ran @ 1000Mhz up to 1400Mhz without panic i got decided Very Happy
Then Kong upgraded range and stabilized firm, that was it.

Thank you to everyone who gave their opinions on this matter I really appreciate it. It was a great deal that I couldn't pass up for either router honestly for new units. I did get the R7000, and it was only $169 so I'm very satisfied with it. Again, thanks everyone!
